Jack Warner, former vice president of FIFA and head of CONCACAF, is outraged that FIFA has awarded the rights of the 2015 Summer Soccer World Cup to the United States of America, in an attempt to pacify the world super power. “Summer World Cup, 2015, from the very same organization that they are accusing of being corrupt. That has to be double standards in my book,” said Mr. Warner in a video released on his
website, as a dramatic background score reaches its crescendo. Well, not so much out of sympathy for Warner but more due to the absurdity of having a Summer World Cup in the USA in such short notice. Surely, FIFA can’t be serious? As it turns out, they weren’t. The piece of paper that Warner waves frantically accusing FIFA, Sepp Blatter, USA, and everything under the sun that has conspired against him, is an
article that was published in the Onion. Now, the average consumer of internet news would know Onion is a reputed satirical news website. But Mr. Warner clearly didn’t. Promptly after most major media houses picked up on this world-wide-web gaffe of the indicted Trinidadian, attempts were made to edit out the parts from the video on his website that involved waving of the Onion article print-out. However, the original 8 minute version of the video is safely preserved on YouTube. Much like the people of Winterfell in the Game of Thrones, the internet remembers.
