ISL: Cavin brace helps Atletico de Kolkata beat FC Goa 2-1

Atletico de Kolkata scored twice in the the last 20 minutes of their match against FC Goa at Fatorda Stadium to remain unbeaten in the inaugural Indian Super League. FC Goa had taken a lead through former Arsenal player Andre Santos in the 21st minute when experienced Indian winger Clifford Miranda’s pass found the Brazilian, who expertly controlled it before unleashing a powerful strike past Apoula Edel. Kolkata, who lost Denzil Franco in the first half due to injury, then had a tough time breaking down Goa on their own turf but kept going at it until finally finding the equaliser in the 72nd minute. ISL[/caption] Fikru, who had a fine chance to score from Cavin Lobo’s ball earlier, found his attacking partner who took the ball down off his forehead before expertly finishing it off. It was a half of numerous chances as Robert Pires, Gabriel Fernandes and Santos made forays into Kolkata’s box – but it was the visitors who found the winner late in the game. Borja Fernandez’ lobbed through ball was cleared but fell to Lobo who sent in a rocket past Jan Seda to break the home fans’ hearts and settle one of the most open matches of the tournament so far. He also became the first Indian to score a brace in the ISL. It was a fiery encounter between the two football cities of India – Gregory and Fikru Teferra went at each other in the first half – and Lobo and Andre Santos getting into a heated argument in the second. Even in the dying minutes, Gregory’s boot caught Biswajit Saha in the head which led to more handbags. Kolkata will take home the spoils but Goa are getting stronger every match – they just don’t have the results to show for it.
