The Justice Mudgal IPL Probe Committee has squashed reports that they are to travel to England to quiz players on the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal that erupted last year. The BCCI sent out a press release on behalf of the committee, which stated that it had met in Chennai on 15 and 16 August to interact with its investigative team and other investigative authorities. Reuters[/caption] “The Committee or any of its members have no intention of travelling outside the country for any interaction with the players, contrary to some speculations in the media. The Committee is fully alive of the fact that any interaction with the players during a series may disturb their poise and concentration,” the release said. The scandal, which led to the arrest of Srinivasan’s son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan, on charges that he had bet on IPL games, eventually led to N Srinivasan stepping down as BCCI chief pending a Supreme Court investigation, with Sunil Gavaskar taking over as the main man for the duration of IPL 2014. While it goes without saying that Srinivasan and Meiyappan will be part of the investigation into the scandal, the release stated that both men have not been questioned so far. “The Committee would like to clarify that neither the Committee nor its members interacted with Mr. Srinivasan or Mr. Meiyappan on 15-16 August in Chennai or at any other time during the second leg of its investigation ordered by the Hon’ble Supreme Court on 16 May this year.”
The scandal led to N Srinivasan stepping down as BCCI chief pending investigation — and Sunil Gavaskar took over as the main man for the duration of IPL 7.
