The Supreme Court appointed probe commission headed by (Retd) Justice Mukul Mudgal on Monday submitted its final report to the apex court on the IPL-6 betting and spot-fixing scandal. The report was submitted in a sealed envelope and the next hearing in the case will be on 10 November. AFP[/caption] This report in the Indian Express, suggests that a team India player, who was part of the World Cup squad has been named in the Mudgal Committee report for his ’link’ with illegal bookmakers and match fixers. He is no longer a regular in the Indian side. The Indian Express reports that the player in question was not a part of the Chennai or Jaipur franchises — the two teams currently under the scanner, but he was summoned by investigators after they stumbled upon a three-year-old tape that spoke of a fix that went wrong. S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were the three IPL cricketers arrested on allegations of spot-fixing while former CSK ‘Team Principal’ Gurunath Meiyappan and Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara Singh were also arrested on charges of betting during the sixth edition of the cash-rich league. Meiyappan is the son-in-law of former BCCI president N Srinivasan. While Srinivasan had said that Meiyappan was just a cricket enthusiast, phone transcripts submitted as part of the original Mudgal committee report in February tell a different story. According to a Mint report “Meiyappan was involved in placing bets on matches in the sixth edition of the IPL, with actor Vindoo Dara Singh, another accused in the case. Singh, in turn, allegedly placed bets with bookies Sandip Chabra and others.” Srinivasan, who is also under the scanner for the IPL scam, was asked by the Supreme Court to step down as BCCI chief in the aftermath of the spot fixing scandal. The transcripts also indicate that all teams during the sixth edition of the IPL were bet on. Mint reports that Singh acted like a link between the bookies and Meiyappan, and also had information on which team would bowl or bat first and other insider information. “…according to me, RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) won’t come to bat. Punjab will come to bat and make runs and RCB will come and they won’t do zolzal, they will chase it. It looks like they will chasing it, but they won’t be chasing it and they will lose. That is my thinking. You are saying, you are saying it’s opposite. You are saying RCB will come to bat and make runs and then Punjab will be chased. This is not going to happen…if then…then Punjab will lose. RCB…you know how is Virat? Once he get the chance na, then he say ‘what can I do? I am sorry…I will say, do to likh de, got out. What can I do?," Mint quoted Singh as saying in one of the phone conversations. (Read the full report here.) Meanwhile, it has been learnt that committee which comprised of Justice Mudgal, Additional Solicitor General L Nageswara Rao, advocate Nilay Datta, Deputy DG (Narcotics Control Bureau) BB Mishra and former India captain Sourav Ganguly got together in the capital as the final draft of the report along with finishing touches were being provided. However Justice Mudgal did not confirm or deny about the committee’s last meeting. The Supreme Court’s next date of hearing is 10 November and the entire BCCI is eagerly waiting the verdict of the apex court. With agency inputs
