The tenth season of the Indian Premier League will begin from 5 April, 2017 at Hyderabad.
Nine seasons have already passed so there are plenty of numbers to play with. Players like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle have created and broken many records till date in the tournament.
This will be just another IPL for them but there are players like Jason Roy, Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan who will make their debut and will try to break as many records as possible.
Here’s a low-down of the figures that matter from the last nine seasons of the cash-rich tournament.
Virat Kohli broke the record of Suresh Raina in the last season of IPL by scoring 973 runs from 16 matches at an average of 81.08. He now holds the record for scoring most runs in the league till date with Raina in second place and Rohit Sharma at third.
He may no longer have the captaincy at Rising Pune Supergiant, but MS Dhoni has always led from the front. A look at how captaincy brings out the best in him.
It’s important for IPL teams to find a wicketkeeper who can bat well. MS Dhoni holds the record for scoring the most amount of runs among wicket-keepers in IPL. Australia’s Adam Gilchrist is the only foreigner in the top 5 of the list.
Cricket is a team game but some individuals like Kohli and David Warner have proved last year that if an individual plays to his potential, he can win the tournament for his side.
Gayle holds the record of scoring the most runs in a single T20 innings. He achieved this feat by scoring an unbeaten 175 against Pune Warriors in 2013 at Bengaluru. He also holds the record of scoring the most centuries in the IPL.
T20 is a format which allows batsmen to hit freely without a second thought for consequences. This freewheeling attitude has led to batsmen getting fifties in less than 20 balls. Here are the fastest 50s in the tournament:
There are only five players who have completed their centuries in IPL by using less than 45 balls.
Lasith Malinga has played a key role in helping Mumbai Indians win two IPL titles by picking up wickets at crucial stages of the game. He holds the record of picking up the most wickets in the league.
Just like Malinga for Mumbai, Dwayne Bravo was also a key member of Chennai Super Kings team. He is the only bowler to have taken 25+ wickets twice in a season of IPL.
Adam Zampa became the second bowler to take a six-wicket haul in IPL last year after Sohail Tanvir did the same in the first season of IPL.
Dinesh Karthik needs to effect two dismissals in the next season of IPL to become the first wicketkeeper in IPL who has had a hand in 100 dismissals.
Sarfaraz Khan is the youngest player to play an IPL match while Brad Hogg is the oldest. However, is Pravin Tambe plays a match for Sunrisers Hyderabad this season, he will overhaul Hogg.
It’s imperative for young players to perform well in the IPL to make a case for them in their respective countries’ squad.
Manish Pandey is the only batsman to score a century in the league while still under the age of 20.
The partnership of 229 runs between Kohli and de Villiers against the Gujarat Lions at Bengaluru last year is not only the highest in IPL, but also the highest ever for any wicket in T20 cricket.
It will be intriguing to see who will hold the record of winning most Man of the Match awards at the end of season 10.
Dwayne Bravo is the only player in IPL history to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets till day.
Fitness can be key to performing well in this league. No one embodies this better than Suresh Raina, who holds the records of having the most appearances and the most consecutive appearances in the league.
