IPL 2017: KKR's Robin Uthappa credits his understanding with Gautam Gambhir for successful stands

Robin Uthappa has had an above-par outing in the 10th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) so far, and his match-winning all-round effort for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their away clash against Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) is a case in point.

The Karnataka wicketkeeper-batsman, who last wore the Indian jersey during the team's tour of Zimbabwe back in 2015, has hit three half-centuries for KKR in seven innings, batting at No 3, and is currently sixth in the list of top run-getters in the ongoing tournament.

Wednesday's outing saw him form a match-winning 158-run stand with skipper Gautam Gambhir, which helped the winners of the 2012 and 2014 editions post a comfortable seven-wicket win over RPS to move ahead of table-toppers Mumbai Indians. What added to his stellar performance with the bat was his equally commendable effort with the gloves, effecting three stumpings, among which were those of MS Dhoni and Manoj Tiwary inside an over.

Reflecting on his partnership with Gambhir, which used to be KKR's opening combination before the team management decided to bring in Australian import Chris Lynn, and later Sunil Narine, as Gambhir opening partner, Uthappa pointed towards the bond that he shared with Gambhir, and the understanding between them that had led to a number of successful partnerships.

"Gauti (Gambhir) and I understand each other very well when we are batting. We understand the importance of strike rotation and support each other in that sense. When we take a decision on the field, we really stick to that decision, and when you do that, it works in your favour," Uthappa was quoted as saying according to iplt20.com.

Uthappa added that he did not feel the disadvantage of missing out on the opportunity of batting in the first six overs after being moved to No 3, saying that his confidence in his batting skills has helped him get big scores at a position different from where he is normally used to.

"As a batsman, you lose out on the advantage of batting in the first six overs. I have immense faith in my batting; I know I don't need that kind of advantage to score the runs that I need to score for the team. I back myself and I am really confident and sure about my batting," added Uthappa in the report.
