Pacer Zaheer Khan is back in India's Test team for next month's tour of South Africa. But opener Gautam Gambhir has been ignored despite good performances in the Ranji Trophy.
Ambati Rayudu makes his maiden entry into India's Test team as reserve batsman.
Umesh Yadav also makes a comeback into the team as the selectors elected to go with five fast bowlers. Ishant Sharma, who was dropped for the ODIs against West Indies, stays in the Test team.
Ashwin, Ojha and Jadeja keep their places in the squad but Amit Mishra has not been picked. Three spinners is slightly odd considering the tracks usually assist fast bowlers.
If you don't count Rohit Sharma as a specialist opener -- then India has gone with just two openers in Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan. Will Ambati Rayudu be asked to step up as opener if needed or with Rahane be the man?
The two Tests and three ODIs make for a short tour but facing Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and company will still be a test for this fledgling Indian team.
