D Harika became the second player from India to reach the semifinals of the Women’s world chess championship when she defeated China’s fourth seed Zhao Xue in the quarterfinals after two rapid games. Harika, who was sent for a special preparation with Elizbar Ubilava, and Xue were locked 1-1 after the classic games on Wednesday night after the Indian had wriggled out of a tight position to claim a draw. She adopted the Kings India variation and finished with a combination to force Xue into a bad position. She then just maintained a better position with white and took the draw at the first possible opportunity. Harika, who is supported by Lakshya, will now face Ana Ushenina of Ukraine for a place in the final.
