That’s it from us at Firstpost on our coverage of the 1st Test between India and New Zealand at the Green Park in Kanpur on Monday. Hope you enjoyed our coverage.

Do come back on Friday for our coverage of the 2nd Test, which is also India’s 250th Test on home soil, and will take place at the iconic Eden Gardens. Till then, take care and goodbye!

04:06 PM (IST)

Team India skipper Virat Kohli

There were a lot of positives that we would like to take into the next match, There were two sessions where the game slipped away from us. Wouldve been nice to get closer to their first innings total. We werent able to sustain pressure with the bat towards the end of our innings. Ronchi and Santner were both fantastic, especially today when the ball was spinning sharply.

It is about recovery ahead of the 2nd Test. Important that the boys recover nicely.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson

Ravindra Jadeja:

I was just preparing myself as a batsman, I was look to give myself some time. Duleep Trophy helped me a lot. Was quite confident in those wicket. I was enjoying my bowling. The wicket was pretty slow in the first innings. We tried to mix the pace.

Ashwin is a very good bowler on slow turning tracks, and Id like to congratulate him for 200 wickets. We used to talk during breaks about how to get wickets. When Williamson and Latham were batting, me and Ashwin would discuss strategies.

04:06 PM (IST)

Ravindra Jadeja wins the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance, which included unbeaten scores of 42 and 50 and match figures of 6/131.

OUT! THAT’S IT! Ashwin traps Neil Wagner lbw to wrap the New Zealand innings up for 236, sealing a 197-run win for the hosts in their 500th Test, and helping them gaining a 1-0 series lead as a result.

Ashwin finishes with figures of 6/132 as a result, his 19th innings fifer as well as fifth 10-wicket-match haul. Ends what has been another successful session for India, although New Zealand did not bow out of the match without a fight.

Neil Wagner lbw Ravichandran Ashwin 0(12)

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! After getting smashed for a six off a tossed-up ball a couple of deliveries ago, Ashwin fires a quicker one to Sodhi around leg-stump, with the ball continuing along the line. Sodhi looks to glance it down the leg side, but fails to make contact, with the stump getting knocked over. Ashwin gets his 19th fifer in Tests, and the hosts are now just one wicket away from gaining a 1-0 series lead.

After 80 overs, New Zealand 224/8 (Ish Sodhi 6, Trent Boult 1)

OUT! Ravi Ashwin strikes in the 80th over, and delivers with a near unplayable delivery, one that pitches outside leg and goes through a massive change in angle. Santner, surprised by the turn and bounce, ends up edging it feebly to Rohit Sharma at gully. The batsman cannot believe it, and looks dumbfounded for a minute, before beginning the slow walk back to the pavilion. Departs after a fighting innings of 71 off 179 balls, as Ashwin grabs his fourth.

India need two more wickets to go 1-0 in the three-Test series!

04:06 PM (IST)

After 73 overs, New Zealand 205/7 (Mitchell Santner 57, Ish Sodhi 2)

04:06 PM (IST)

After 70 overs, New Zealand 197/7 (Mitchell Santner 50, Ish Sodhi 1)

OUT! Fantastic display of reverse-swing by Shami, as he uproots Craig’s middle-stump after crashing through his defence! With the limelight on Ashwin and Jadeja, Shami has quietly gone about business, removing Watling and Craig off successive deliveries (in separate overs) for a shot at a hat-trick chance. Sodhi survives on the hat-trick ball, although the ball narrowly misses the off-stump. Meanwhile, Santner brings up his maiden fifty in what has been a stoic display so far.

India are three wickets away from gaining a 1-0 series lead, with more than two sessions to go.

Mark Craig b Mohammed Shami 1(2)

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! Shami removes the aggressive Watling with an inswinger, which raps him on the front pad along the leg-stump line! The wicketkeeper-batsman departs for 18, as New Zealand lose their sixth wicket with 194 on board.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 65 overs, New Zealand 187/5 (Mitchell Santner 42, BJ Watling 18)

Watling has scored more than 90 per cent of his runs so far in boundaries, and is showing a plenty of intent at the moment. India may have got rid of a threat in the form of Ronchi, but a Santner-Watling partnership looms over their head if they don’t pull something off quickly.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 60 overs, New Zealand 170/5 (Mitchell Santner 38, BJ Watling 5)

Santner seems to be unfazed by the pressure that the dismissal has brought on his shoulders, and goes for a slog over midwicket against Ashwin an over after the dismissal. BJ Watling is the new batsman at the crease, and gets his first boundary after a couple of deliveries with a sweep towards the vacant square-leg region.

India vs New Zealand: Spinner Mark Craig ruled out of Tests, Jeetan Patel names replacement – Firstposthttp://www.firstpost.com

04:06 PM (IST)

OUT! And it is Jadeja who finally gets the breakthrough! What have you done Ronchi! Looks to go for the big shot towards leg side, and gets deceived by the turn, resulting in a top-edge towards cover. Ashwin takes a simple catch near the boundary circle, as India manage to break the 102-run stand.

Luke Ronchi c Ravichandran Ashwin b Ravindra Jadeja 80(120); New Zealand 158/5

04:06 PM (IST)

After 56 overs, New Zealand 158/4 (Luke Ronchi 80, Mitchell Santner 31)

The Ronchi-Santner partnership is starting to grow on the hosts, and Santner is looking especially intimidating with his clean strikes as well as temperament. Ronchi drives the next ball wide of mid-on to bring up the 150 for New Zealand, before bringing up the century stand with Santner with a smash over the umpire’s head to bring up the century stand with Santner.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 50 overs, New Zealand 119/4 (Luke Ronchi 53, Mitchell Santner 19)

Santner rocks back, and cuts an Ashwin delivery through the covers for a four. The duo have looked well-settled against the feared spin duo of Ashwin-Jadeja so far, and are starting to frustrate home skipper Kohli.

04:06 PM (IST)

BREAKING: Mark Craig has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series due to a side strain, reports ESPNCricinfo. Jeetan Patel has been named his replacement. Will keep you guys updated on any further developments on the story.

04:06 PM (IST)

FIFTY for Luke Ronchi! The middle-order batsman gets there in 83 balls, with the help of five fours and six in the innings so far. This is his 2nd fifty in Test cricket.

04:06 PM (IST)

After 45 overs, New Zealand 1047/4 (Luke Ronchi 47, Mitchell Santner 13)

Santner shows his first signs of aggression, coming down the track and lofting Ashwin over long-on to bring up the 100 for the Black Caps. Ronchi brings up another milestone with a boundary, driving through the covers off Jadeja to bring up the fifty-stand with Santner.

The duo have been very impressive in the way they have handled the situation so far, and this partnership will be key to New Zealand’s hopes for salvaging a draw on the final day. Let’s see how Ashwin and Jadeja respond after getting hammered for boundaries.

04:06 PM (IST)

Not a good sign at all!

04:06 PM (IST)

After 40 overs, New Zealand 93/4 (Luke Ronchi 38, Mitchell Santner 8)

As expected, Virat Kohli starts the proceedings off with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Sharp turn as usual, as the pitch is expected to deteriorate further. Meanwhile, Ronchi and Santner start off on a cautious note, having not scored in the first three overs. New Zealand need another 341 to win with six wickets left.
