India vs England: Jonny Bairstow’s rescue act puts visitors at 205/5 at tea

England were 205 for 5 at tea on the opening day of the third Test against India in Mohali on Saturday.

England staged a resilient comeback in the second session of the day, lead by Jonny Bairstow. After struggling at 92/4 at lunch, with the top four batsmen back in the dressing room, the visitors were in a spot of bother at Mohali, despite choosing to bat first.

But Bairstow's rescue act meant that some order was restored and the second session all but belonged to him. The wicketkeeper-batsman scored his 13th Test half-century and second of this series to consolidate the visitors after a horrendous first session.

Jonny Bairstow on 66 and Jos Buttler on 38 were at the crease after the visitors, who trail the five-match series 1-0.

The one wicket to fall in the seassion was Ben Stokes, the centurion from Rajkot, who managed to score 29 before Ravindra Jadeja had him stumped by Parthiv Patel. Virat Kohli had persisted bowling Jadeja and the move paid good dividends as he beat the batsmen who had come forward to play a shot.

Stokes' fall brought Jos Buttler on crease, who is making a Test comeback after a year. Buttler repaid the faith shown in his selection by playing the perfect foil to Bairstow. Both batsmen have struck five fours each in their solid partnership of 61.

In the earlier session, Indian bowlers rocked the England top order, including the wicket of skipper Alastair Cook, to push the visitors onto the back foot in. But the fact that India could take only one wicket tells the tale of the session. England will be hoping the two wicketkeeper-batsmen can extend their partnership while India will be looking for a breakthrough in the final session of the day.
