India got the mental edge at tea on Day 3 of the 3rd Test against England after getting bowled out for a score of 417, with the hosts gaining a 134-run lead thanks to strong lower-order performances.
Ravindra Jadeja (90) and Jayant Yadav (55) brought up their respective fifties to propel the hosts past the 400-run mark, with Ben Stokes (5/73) and Adil Rashid (4/118) sharing nine wickets between them to emerge as the leading lights of the English bowling unit in the first innings.
Resuming from their score of 354/7 at lunch, Jadeja waited for a bit, before launching an all-out attack against Chris Woakes to race away to 90. Having hammered four boundaries in Woakes' 24th over, Jadeja — who earlier celebrated his third Test fifty by wielding his bat like a sword — went for a slog over the bowler's head in the heat of the moment.
Woakes ended up taking a simple catch near the boundary, as the all-rounder got the toe-end of the bat and did not get much power in the shot.
Jayant though, took over as the anchor of the Indian innings after Jadeja's dismissal, and adopted a more cautious approach to bring up his maiden Test half-century in only his second appearance for India.
Stokes suffered a spate of bad luck as skipper Alastair Cook and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow dropped chances in the same over, leaving Stokes livid. Moeen Ali however, made up for their mistakes by taking a simple catch at short midwicket after Jayant miscued a slow off-cutter from Stokes.
Umesh, who earlier brought up the 400 for India with a mighty heave over deep mid-wicket off Moeen, was the last man to depart after edging a Stokes delivery to the keeper to give the New Zealand-born all-rounder his fifth wicket of the innings.
Earlier, Jadeja revived India's innings along with Ravichandran Ashwin with a 97-run partnership that brought India back to life in the match after they were reduced to 204/6 at one stage.
