India vs England, 2nd Test: Hosts fail to get early breakthrough at tea after setting daunting target

After India set England a target of 405 for victory, the visitors were 40 for no loss at tea on the fourth and penultimate day of the second cricket Test against India in Vizag on Sunday.

Skipper Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed were batting on 28 and 12 respectively, in their second innings, needing another 365 for a win. India were unable to make inroads in the entire session, despite all the bowlers getting spells.

In the 28 over bowled, eight were maiden as both English openers stood resolute. The batsmen even played out five consecutive maidens as they dug their heels in. India's spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja bowled eight and nine overs respectively in the session – in very miserly spells – but had no results.

Captain Virat Kohli, standing in the slips, was heard constantly encouraging his bowlers. However, there were no breakthroughs, or even close calls.

Earlier, India were all out for 204 in their second innings with Kohli top scoring with 81. India had begun the day at 98 for 3 but were all out within a session to give England a day-and-a-half to bat.

In the last session play, India would hope to exploit the Day 4 pitch and get a couple of crucial wickets to given them a chance to push for victory early on the last day. But if Cook and Hameed's defensive defiance continues, Kohli may have something to worry about.
