India vs Bangladesh: Virat Kohli's astonishing Test statistics as his record-breaking streak continues

Virat Kohli extended his super-human form with the bat against Bangladesh when he scored yet another double century, to help India to 687 for 6 in their first innings. This was the third consecutive occasion in Tests when India went past 600 in an innings, becoming the first team to ever do so. Kohli was in the thick of each of these scores, and like his team, he has been breaking records after records in the past six months. AP[/caption] In his brisk double hundred against Bangladesh, Kohli surpassed several greats and once again altered the record books, that included eclipsing Donald Bradman’s long-held record. Here is a list of numbers that attempt to sum up the phenomenon that Kohli has been in the last year in the longest format of the game. - With his 204 in Hyderabad on Friday, Kohli became the first ever batsman to score four double hundreds in four consecutive Test series in the history of the game. He went past Donald Bradman and Rahul Dravid who had managed to cross the two-hundred mark in three consecutive Test series. The Indian captain began this run with a 200 in the Caribbean against the West Indies and followed that up with scores of 211 (vs New Zealand), and 235 (vs England) at home. - Kohli joined an elite list of cricketers to have scored four Test hundreds as captain, Graeme Smith and Michael Clarke being the others. However he is still five short of Went Indian legend Brian Lara who has nine hundreds to his name as a skipper. - When the Indian captain reached a score of 144 in his innings against Bangladesh, he went past Virender Sehwag to score most number of runs in Tests in a home season. Sehwag had scored 1105 runs in the 2004/05 season. Kohli now holds that record having scored 1168 runs in this home season. While the former Indian opener needed 17 innings to score his runs, Kohli matched that total in just his fifteenth innings. - The Indian batsman’s score of 1168 in a home season is highest by any captain for any team in world cricket. He went past Graham Gooch’s tally of 1058 runs in the 1990 season. However, the English batsman had scored those runs in just six Test matches at an average of 96.18. - But in terms of performance of Indian captains in a single home Test season, Kohli broke another record, this time surpassing the great Sunil Gavaskar. He has now scored the most number of boundaries as an Indian captain in a season, beating Gavaskar’s tally of 119 boundaries he hit in 1979-80. - Kohli has an astonishing average of 89.84 in this home season. His overall Test average also stands at an impressive 51.91. - The Delhi-born batsman scored a quickfire hundred on the first day of the Hyderabad Test against Bangladesh on Thursday. With that, he has now scored a century against every team he has faced in Test cricket. - Kohli had been criticised for failing to score big hundreds early on in his career. In his first 11 centuries, he only managed to go past the 150-run mark once against Australia (169) at Melbourne. However, he has put all those criticisms to rest in the last year by managing to go past 150 during the last five times he has scored a hundred in Test matches.
