India are in danger of losing one of the Paris Olympics 2024 quotas in boxing due to one of the athletes being provisionally suspended by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) due to a whereabouts violation, it was reported on Friday. The said athlete has won one of the four quotas that India have so far. All four quotas have been won by women boxers.
As per media reports, the boxer accumulated three Whereabouts Failures from April 2022 to March 2023 due to which she has been provisionally suspended.
As per WADA rules, athletes are required to submit whereabouts updates quarterly, and “any combination of three whereabouts failures (filing failure and/or missed test) within a period of 12 months constitute an anti-doping rule violation, for which the applicable sanction is 2 years’ ineligibility subject to a reduction to a minimum of 1 year depending on your degree of fault.”
The whereabouts data is used by anti-doping agencies to conduct surprise and out-of-competition tests.
While most of the media houses have not named the women boxer, the Hindustan Times has identified her as Parveen Hooda, who has won bronze medals at the World Championships and Asian Games.
“Parveen has been provisionally suspended by World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) for a period of 18 months. The news has left us completely shattered,” Hooda’s coach Sudhir Hooda told HT.
“Repeated reminders were sent to Parveen, BFI, and then chief coach (Bernard Dunne) but everyone ignored the emails. Parveen took the matter casually and paid the price,” he added.

More ShortsThe provisional suspension of Praveen has come as a big shock for the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) and lawyer Vidushpat Singhania is currently handling the case for them.
“We are in constant correspondence with IBA. Our main goal is to ensure she is not sanctioned at all. At the very least, we want the suspension to be reduced to one year,” Singhania said.
Nikhat Zareen (flyweight), Preeti Sai Pawar (bantamweight), Parveen Hooda (featherweight) and Lovlina Borgohain (middleweight) are the four boxers to qualify for the Olympics so far from India.
Praveen has not fought a bout since winning bronze at the Asian Games last year and also pulled out of the Elorda Cup, which is currently underway in Kazakhstan, despite her name featuring in the list of participants.
