 "India submits bid to host 2030 Commonwealth Games, strengthens case for 2036 Olympics")
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially submitted an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games . The bid, sent on 13 March 2025, marks India’s renewed push to secure the hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games. India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010, delivering a spectacle in New Delhi that saw a record medal haul for the nation.
India wants to host 2030 CWG to boost chances of hosting Olympics
The bid is seen as a crucial stepping stone toward India’s ultimate goal of hosting the Olympics in 2036. Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed India’s desire to host Olympic Games, there have been sincere efforts from all concerning bodies including the IOA. Securing the 2030 CWG would provide the country with an opportunity to showcase its preparedness and bolster global confidence for an event of Olympic magnitude.
If India secures the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, it plans to reinstate several events that were removed from the 2026 edition. Hockey, shooting, badminton, and wrestling are among the disciplines that have been excluded from the Glasgow 2026 CWG.
“We are interested, and a formal interaction has taken place with the Commonwealth Games Federation regarding this. We have also proposed the inclusion of all disciplines that were dropped from the 2026 CWG,” a source was quoted as saying by PTI.
The exclusion of these events, announced in October last year, was a significant setback for India, as they have historically contributed to a large share of the country’s medal tally at the CWG, Olympics, and Asian Games.
“This proposal aims to safeguard our medal prospects. An informal discussion has been initiated, and we will see how the host city responds,” the source added.
