He went on to hold the title a total of five times, becoming one of the most renowned chess players in the world. His ascension in the sport became an inspiration for many and laid the foundation for India’s dominance in the sport. Anand is still active in the chess circuit, and is also seen as the mentor figure by all the all the other active Indian chess players, along with D Gukesh, who is the current world champion. India currently have 88 Grandmasters, ranking fifth globally in terms of the number of Grandmasters produced per country.

Abhinav Bindra’s Olympic Gold Medal in 2008

Abhinav Bindra’s gold medal win in the 10m Air Rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics was a landmark moment in Indian sports history.
