Ind vs SA day 5: SA win by 10 wickets

Read Tariq Engineer’s detailed match report HERE Kallis: A touch call. Somedays you just wake up and you know it is the right time. CSA, people and team-mates made it a special game. I sat in the dressing room before the Test and looked at the ground and not much has changed in 19 years – just that I am little bit older. Will miss the friendships, the winning times, the losing times… Woolmer, Fletcher… it’ll be nice to catch up with everyone. Just have so many people to thank. Mum, Dad… I hope I made you proud. AB de Villiers (190 runs, 14 catches) is the man of the series: “I have been getting tips for Boucher and really enjoyed it. I enjoyed all the criticism he was getting at the Wanderers and knew something was brewing. Absolute honour playing with Jacques in his final Test – he has been such a rock in the team. He deserves it all.” Steyn (9-147) is the man of the match: “Jacques sat us down after the first day and said that he didn’t want this game to sizzle out. And all the bowlers stood up and delivered.” Smith: “We needed to make sure that we got a lead in the first innings. It was spinning and there was reverse swing. Kallis helped us and Peterson and Du Plessis built it up.” “The wicket didn’t make it easy for us. It almost felt like India.” Dhoni: “First session was crucial, a couple of bad decisions, a couple of bad shots. Overall Test series fantastic for us. Our batsmen didn’t have a lot of overseas experience… overall experience for the batsmen very good one. Bowlers bowled very well and to the plan that they had. “Test matches is about the whole five days. One bad session can make a big difference. A big learning experience for all of them.” “Kallis have been a fantastic cricketer. The luxury he has given the SA to have him in the side. Life has just started for him. Given a lot to cricket. Someone like him always had a big impact on the game.” 18.49 IST SA 59-0. Smith 23, Petersen 31. South Africa finished it off in a flurry of hits to the boundary line. A six and four from Smith did the trick. Kallis’ last Test match has ended in a comprehensive 10-wicket win for the home team. SA win the two-match series 1-0. This is SA’s first Test in Durban since 2008.18.28 IST Players coming back on after tea. 18.09 IST At tea, SA 19-0 after 6 overs. The win is a formality now. 17.55 IST SA 8-0 after 3 overs. Shami and Ishant have the new ball but you have to wonder why Zaheer isn’t bowling to Smith when one considers the record the left-armers record against the SA skipper. Strange times. 17.32 IST India 223 all out after 86 overs: Rahane the last man out – going for a slog… missed the ball completely… clean bowled. SA need 58 runs to win. Kallis led them off the field. But Rahane’s knock showed that batting on this wicket is not an impossible task. A Rahane b Philander 96 (157b, 11x4, 2x6)

17.21 IST India 206-9 after 84.1 overs: Steyn gets another wicket – vicious bouncer at the body. Ishant Sharma tried to fend it off and it looped to AB de Villiers. Ind 206-9. India lead by 40 runs. It was also Steyn’s 350th Test wicket – remarkable achievement. I Sharma c de Villiers b Steyn 1 (10b)

17.12 IST India 201-8 after 83 overs: The new ball has just been taken. Things will get interesting now. Rahane 77, Ishant 0. India lead by 35 runs with 2 wickets remaining. 16.48 IST India 189-8 after 78 overs: Zaheer Khan is gone – trapped LBW by Peterson’s carrom ball – but replays show that he wasn’t out. For the second time in the day, India would be wishing they had DRS. Z Khan lbw b Peterson 3 (41b) 16.39 IST India 182-7 after 75 overs: Rahane and Zaheer are hanging in but there are only 15 overs to go before the new ball in available. 16.30 IST India 179-7: Rahane hangs his bat lazily on a good length delivery from Morkel. It was wide and should have been left and Rahane immediately shakes his head in disappointment at his decision making. He then blocks a good yorker and then tries to slap another one and misses. Close! And risky. 16.20 IST India 177/7: Good aggressive bowling from Morkel and it looks like the hosts want to finish this one up quickly. Zaheer manages to defend a couple of short balls and stick around though. It’s back to Steyn now… Play has resumed after lunch 15.04 IST At lunch on Day 5: India 173-7 after 68 overs. Rahane on 50 is showing some fight but otherwise everything that could have gone wrong for India in the first session has. A wicket was lost off the first ball of the session and thereafter India kept losing regular wickets. India lead by 7 runs with 3 wickets remaining. 15.04 IST India 154-7. Another wicket! This is silly cricket from India. Jadeja got off the mark with a six. Mind you, India are trying to save a match here. And then he perishes while trying to repeat the shot. Horrible cricket. Horrible, simply horrible. R Jadeja c Morkel b Peterson 8 (5b, 1x6)

14.42 IST GONE! Dhoni gives his wicket away. Peterson the bowler. India 146-6 after 61.1 overs. He tried to turn it to the leg-side but failed to keep it down and found the fielder. Things are going horribly wrong for India here. M Dhoni c Petersen b Peterson 15 (29b, 2x4) 14.42 IST India 136-5 after 59 overs. Dhoni 13, Rahane 26. Relatively quiet 30 minutes for India. Much-needed respite too. The duo have put on 32 runs in 8.2 overs. 14.08 IST India 104-5 after 50.4 overs. Rohit Shamra has been trapped LBW by Philander. No bat involved. That was out. Philander also has a few words with the batsman. There was no doubt about this one. R Sharma lbw b Philander 25 (46b, 2x4, 1x6) 13.46 IST India 100-4 after 49 overs, trail by 66 runs. Rohit and Rahane standing firm in the middle at the moment. India seem to ridden out the initial storm. Things relaxing a bit now. Just 5 runs in first 30 minutes today, 27 in the next 30. 13.46 IST Ind 91-4. Steyn gets some rest. Philander into the attack now. Respite? Not quite.  13.46 IST Ind 91-4. The umpires have stepped in and put an end to the chatter. Peterson into the attack and Rohit attacks. Down the track and straight down the ground for a six. 13.39 IST Ind 81-4. Rohit is at the non-striker’s end and he continues to talk back to Steyn. Rohit’s comeback: “We’ll see how you do when you come to India.” That’s what Gambhir told the English players too… remember. And we all know how that went. But Rohit needs to be careful there – can’t let his concentration waver. He has to use this incident to get better – to focus – to make runs. 13.33 IST Ind 78-4. Some chatter in the middle. Steyn to Rohit: “I have got more runs than you in this series.” From the slips: “Keep talking brother, keep talking.’ Rohit had a few words of his own to add to the conversation. Fun. The Mumbai boys, Rohit and Rahane, are under immense pressure. [caption id=“attachment_1313915” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Dale struck two big blows early in the day. Pujara clean bowled by Steyn! Ind 71-4 Steyn went wider and angled the ball in. It moved off the pitch and hit the off-stump. Pujara didn’t know what hit him. What a ball, what a bowler! This match could be over very quickly. Good job not taking the new ball, Dhoni. Good job. That’s when India gave it away. C Pujara b Steyn 32 (100b, 4x4)

12.58 IST WICKET! India 68-3. India First ball of the day and Kohli is walking back. Steyn the bowler but the Indian batsman doesn’t look pleased at all. He even has a few words with the umpire. But no DRS to help him. Replays show the ball brushed the shoulder. V Kohli c de Villiers b Steyn 11 (27b, 1x4)

12.50 IST Day 5 promises to be a thriller. But unlike the first Test only SA have a chance of winning here – Dhoni’s baffling tactics made sure of that. India have their two best batsmen, Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara, in the middle and they need at least one of them to stick around for the best part of two session. India still trail by 98 runs. [caption id=“attachment_1313757” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Pujara will be key for India. AP](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/Pujara_leave_AP.jpg) Pujara will be key for India. AP[/caption] Read Tariq Engineer’s detailed Day 4 report HERE 21.13 IST After 36 overs, India are 68/2. Bad light has brought play to a stop and the umpires have decided that it’s stumps too. The players have trooped off the field and Kallis once again leads them off. India still trail by 98 runs. 20.49 IST After 27.5 overs, India are 53/2. WHAT A CATCH!!! Du Plessis takes a stunner to send back Dhawan. The left-hander timed it well and would have thought that the ball would clear the fielder with ease but Du Plessis timed his jump at midwicket even better and took a one-handed catch. Brilliant. Dhawan has had no luck on this tour. S Dhawan c du Plessis b Peterson 19 (87b, 2x4)  20.15 IST After 20 overs, India are 30/1. Slow going. Pujara and Dhawan haven’t given any chances yet. SA have Duminy in the attack now. 19.48 IST After 14 overs, India are 15/1. Things haven’t got any easier but Peterson is into the attack and that should give Pujara and Dhawan some relief from all the short balls. 19.32 IST After 10 overs, India are 10/1. Lots of short balls from the SA bowlers. They are pushing the India batsmen back. Steyn and Philander have been wonder. Steyn gets a rest now, Morkel into the attack now. 19.10 IST India 8-1 after 5.3 overs. Murali Vijay edges one to the slips off Philander. Gone! They kept pushing him back with the short ball and then bowled one up to the bat and it did the trick. He just didn’t get forward enough. M Vijay c Smith b Philander 6 (13b, 1x4) 19.03 IST India 6-0 after 2 overs. It hasn’t been easy for the India openers. Already a few deliveries have cut away sharply. The short ball is in use as well. This is a big session for India. 18.34 IST SA all out 500 after 155.2 overs – they are 166 runs ahead. Jadeja takes the last wicket – a nice caught and bowled – to finish with bowling figures of 58.2-15-138-6. Baffling tactics – it might have made sense to just declare during the tea break and come out and bowl immediately. India’a openers will have a job on their hands – what will Dhawan’s approach be? More importantly, how will Steyn be bowling? M Morkel c & b Jadeja 0 (2m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00 18.30 IST SA 500-9 after 155 overs. And Du Plessis has been run out on resumption. That seems to be the only way to dismiss him. Good for the match though, SA won’t hang around much longer. India will be out to bat soon. Du Plessis was out of the blocks on the non-strikers end pretty quickly before Philander sent him back. Direct hit from mid-wicket by Rohit Sharma caught him out. India has been hitting the stumps pretty regularly no? F du Plessis run out 43 (70b 4x4 0x6) SR: 61.42 17.50 IST SA 497-8 after 154.1 overs. Tea has been taken in the meanwhile. 17.33 IST SA 497-8 after 154.1 overs. SA ahead by 163 runs, Peterson holes out after making 61 and it’s raining. It’s all happening at Kingsmead. Players going off the field. Another delay. R Peterson c Vijay b Mohammed Shami 61 (52b, 9x4, 1x6) 17.20 IST SA 487-7 after 153 overs. Peterson and Du Plessis have rocked it – they have put on 100 runs in just 16.5 overs, RR: 5.94. 17.20 IST SA 480-7 after 152 overs. The lead is up to 146 runs. Peterson got his 50 off just 44 balls with a lofted shot straight down the ground. Superb knock and it has put India under immense pressure. 17.15 IST SA 472-7 after 151 overs. The lead is up to 138 runs. In the 11 overs bowled this session, SA have scored 75 runs. India haven’t bowled well – all over the place and SA are going for it now. It might look like Dhoni’s decision to delay the new ball was working but had he taken it first thing in the morning, SA would not have attacked in the same manner. But now, SA already had a big lead. 16.55 IST SA 431-7 after 146 overs. NEW BALL TAKEN. FINALLY. According to Cricinfo, the umpires intervened. India had to use the the new ball now, 66 overs after it was due. 16.35 IST SA 424-7 after 143 overs. In the three overs after the break, SA have added 28 runs to the total. Lead up to 90 runs now. 16.20 IST Covers are off and players are back on. We lost around 15 minutes. 16.04 IST It started raining during lunch. The covers are on. South Africa 395-7 after 140 overs. 15.29 IST And that’s lunch. South Africa 395-7 after 140 overs. In that session – 35.1 overs, 96 runs, 2 wickets. RR 2.73. South Africa lead by 61 runs with 3 wickets remaining in the 1st innings. India managed to keep SA in check but it never looked like they were going for a win. Looks like Dhoni has decided that a win is beyond India. Kinda sad. Kallis got a ton in his last test and also went past Dravid to become the third highest run-getter in the history of the game – those were the highlights of the session. 15.08 IST WICKET! South Africa 387-7 after 136.1 overs. It was wide and the edge went through to the keeper. Hardly any celebration though. South Africa lead by 53 runs with 3 wickets remaining in the 1st innings. D Steyn c Dhoni b Khan 44 (94b, 7x4) 14.58 IST WICKET! South Africa 384-6 after 133.3 overs. That is the fifth wicket for Ravindra Jadeja – amazing spell 52-14-124-5. But no one is talking about that. Kallis went for the big shot, got a top edge and Dhoni took it easily. SA’s greatest cricketer may have played his last innings. On 115, Kallis went past Rahul Dravid in Test run-getters’ list, is now third behind Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting. The lead is exactly 50 runs now. J Kallis c Dhoni b Jadeja 115 (316b, 13x4)14.38 IST South Africa 374-5 after 130 overs. The new ball could have been taken 50 overs back. Dravid making jokes in the commentaary box about how maybe the umpires don’t have a new ball or that a message needs to be sent to Kookaburra. These are baffling tactis. SA have a lead of 40 runs now. 14.21 IST SA 369-5 after 126 overs. Kallis 108, Steyn 36. The lead is up to 35 runs. South Africa are moving ahead steadily. It make take one manic session to give them the complete advantage. 14.14 IST SA 361-5 after 124 overs. Kallis 105, Steyn 31. The lead is up to 27 runs. Kallis now 10 run shy of overtaking Dravid to become third highest run-scorer in history of Test cricket. Steyn, meanwhile, has decided to use the long handle. This will be fun. Still no new ball for India though. 13.54 IST SA 341-5 after 119.4 overs. Test match century no.45 for Jacques Kallis, 7th against India. Stunning knock. The 100 runs took 273 balls and 13 centuries. Among those with 100-plus Tests, Jacques Kallis be first player to finish his career with a century.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

13.54 IST SA 340-5 after 119 overs. Kallis on 99 and in no seeming hurry to get to his ton. He is the fourth SA batsman to get a ton in his last test. 13.49 IST SA 338-5 after 118 overs. SA have the lead now – ahead by 4 runs. Kallis is on 98 and this has been a brilliant innings in not so easy conditions.  13.32 IST SA 326-5 after 115 overs. Baffling tactics really. Kallis marching towards another ton even as Steyn makes merry and hits the big shots. Perhaps Dhoni isn’t taking the new ball because he is afraid that India might leak too many runs and that might come back to bite the visitors. 13.09 IST SA 309-5 after 109 overs. Kallis 83, Steyn 4. India still haven’t taken the new ball but no alarms for the SA batsmen either. SA trail by just 25 runs now. Surely a new ball could help India now – it is pretty overcast and they will get more bounce too.

12.34 IST India need a pretty special Day 4. Dhoni may probably be tempted to take the new ball early today and will hope that it brings him a few wickets. SA ended Day 3 on 299-5 after 104.5 overs, still trailing by 35 runs. Day 3 report Rain cut short the final session on Day 3 with South Africa still shy of India’s first-innings total but there is no doubt the hosts will feel better about their position than the visitors, especially with Jacques Kallis looking like scoring a hundred in his final Test. India struggled to take wickets on a flat pitch, with only Ravindra Jadeja, who took four of the five wickets to fall on the day, consistently asking any questions of South Africa’s batsmen Such was the lack of penetration from his fast men that Dhoni even delayed taking the new ball, choosing to bowl Rohit Sharma in tandem with Jadeja for most of the final hour of play. As a result, Jadeja has bowled more than one-third of India’s total number of overs - 37 out of 104.5 – in taking 4 for 87. Read full Day 3 report HERE. 20.16 IST And that’s it for today. Play has been called off – we will have another early start tomorrow. At 1300 hrs IST. Join you again then. 19.21 IST: SA 299-5 after 104.5 overs. It’s not just bad light – there’s rain too now. The players have gone off and play had been stopped. 19.21 IST: SA 298-5 after 103.2 overs. Dhoni’s gamble of not taking the new ball has worked and it’s Jadeja who has once again given India the big breakthrough by trapping Duming lbw. Duminy lbw b RA Jadeja 28 (82 b 4x4)  18.46 IST: SA 283-4 after 94 overs. Kallis and Duminy continue in the same manner. No effort to score runs quickly. India have still not taken the new ball. Rohit Sharma is in operation from one end. The light isn’t great though. 18.08 IST: SA 267-4 after 89 overs at tea. Kallis still going strong on 61 and Duminy is on 13. India tried everything and it really took a pretty special ball from Jadeja to send AB back. In the post-lunch session, SA scored 86 runs in 32 overs for the loss of one wicket.17.25 IST: SA 250-4 after 76 overs. Last Test match, no problem. Jacques Kallis gets his 59th Test fifty, 6th versus India. It is also his 150th international half century. Classy innings, classy player. He hasn’t looked like getting out. 17.15 IST: SA 240-4 after 74 overs. Classic left-arm spinner’s dismissal. Pitched in line with off-stump, turned, took the edge and caught at slips. Who is India’s bowler at Durban? The answer has to be Jadeja. Superb bowling this. AB de Villiers made 74 and India finally have a breakthrough. 16.53 IST: SA 224-3 after 68.3 overs. Big mix-up in the middle between Kallis (41) and AB (65). AB was on strike and Both almost end up at the same end but Zaheer can’t hit the target. AB dived to get in but if Zak had hit, India would have had a wicket. Lucky for SA. 16.42 IST: SA 222-3. After lunch: 9 overs, 40 runs, 0 wickets. 16.36 IST: SA 213-3 after 65 overs. Kallis and AB have put on 100 off 186 balls. They are motoring along now. Five fours since the lunch break already and four of them were absolute classics. Two each off the bats of AB and Kallis. India need a plan here – right now, they seem to be running blind. 16.21 IST: SA 203-3 after 62 overs. AB 54, Kallis 33. Lunch is over but nothing has changed for India. In fact, Kallis and AB are looking stronger with every passing minute. The partnership is now worth 90 off 172 balls. AB de Villiers got his fifty off 87 balls, 5 fours. 15.29 IST: At lunch, SA 181-3 after 57 overs. Kallis 26, de Villiers 39. Once again, SA shut shop just before lunch. But they have recovered well after losing three quick wickets early in the session. Kallis and AB have looked solid and not given India any chances. 15.11 IST: SA 175-3 after 53 overs. India have taken good care of the ball and this is around the time it should start to reverse. Shami into the attack now, can he make a difference? SA are steadily pulling the match back in their favour.  14.58 IST: SA 152-3 after 45 overs. Slow and steady. India trying hard to make a breakthrough, but SA refusing to budge.14.16 IST: SA 124-3 after 38.5 overs. And Kallis is off the mark – he needed 16 balls to do so. 14.14 IST: SA 123-3 after 38 overs. Another change in the bowling attack – Zaheer comes in. Kallis has been in the middle for two overs but he hasn’t managed to get off the mark yet. 13.58 IST: SA 113-3 after 33.1 overs. Now Jadeja strikes. Petersen pushes at it and it just about carried to first slip, where Vijay took a smart catch. Meanwhile, Kallis walked in to a guard of honour – even the umpires were applauding him. He is now joined by AB de Villiers. AN Petersen c Vijay b Jadeja 62 (100b 8x4 0x6) SR: 62.0013.55 IST: SA 113-2. Amla has been bowled again. In the first Test, he was caught trying to leave the ball but this time round, he was beaten all ends up by Shami’s reverse swing. Superb bowling. It was pitched up and Amla moved to play it but missed it completely. Big wicket for India. Amla has had most of the strike. Shami and Jadeja are giving Dhoni the control he craves.13.28 IST: SA 103-1. And Smith throws his wicket away – he had been itching to go after Jadeja. But the left-armer kept his discipline and Smith finally lost his cool. He tried to combat the rough but using his feet but the ball bounced, hit high up on the bat and Shikhar Dhawan took a brilliant catch running back from mid-wicket. Amla is in next and don’t expect him to leave too many balls alone today. G Smith c Dhawan b Jadeja 47 (81b, 7x4) 13.15 IST: Alviro Petersen survives a huge appeal for a stumping. Replays proved inconclusive – they couldn’t show whether he had anything behind the line for sure. They couldn’t show that he was on the line either. What is the use of having all these cameras and not being able to use them? SA 98/0 after 24 overs. [caption id=“attachment_1311405” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Smith has continued to attack. The match will be starting in a bit and India will hope that the pacemen find their rhythm today. Zaheer, Shami and Ishant weren’t looking very good on day two – in fact the most impressive bowler was Ravindra Jadeja. So until reverse swing becomes a factor, India need to hold their own. SA’s run-rate has been very impressive and Dhoni will hope to bring that under control too. To read Tariq Engineer’s detailed Day 2 match report, CLICK HERE 22.01 IST: SA 82-0 after 20 overs. Smith 35, Petersen 46. And that caps a stunning turnaround for South Africa. Yesterday, India had dominated the day but today SA came storming back into the match thanks to Dale Steyn’s 6-100. Super bowling. What surprise will Day 3 bring? Will India find their way back into the match? Will SA continue to dominate?21.29 IST: SA 50-0 after 13 overs. They now trail by 284 runs with 10 wickets in hand. Smith and Petersen have been superb. 21.14 IST: SA 40-0 after 10 overs. It sounds like a very good start but remember they had 36 after 5 overs. So India has managed to pull things back a bit. 20.46 IST: SA 29-0 after 4 overs. Stunning start to the SA innings. Both the openers have pushed hard at the ball and looked to play shots. Not too much swing for the Indian bowlers. 20.32 IST: SA 10-0 after 1 over. Two fours in the first over – both by Graeme Smith. This is an interesting session. India need to keep their wits about them. The collapse would have rattled India a bit and the bowlers need a few good overs to settle the nerves.20.16 IST: India 334 all out after 111.3 overs. Rahane got his first fifty but then Morne Morkel got Shami’s wicket. Stunning turnaround for SA. This was very good work by SA. They now looked like the world’s best team. Steyn finishes with 6-100. Morkel with 3-50. De Villiers also took five catches behind the wickets. That’s some symmetry for you. India will be disappointed with their effort today. Pujara and Vijay put on 157 – the others didn’t do much after that. Mohammed Shami c Smith b Morkel 1 (6b) 20.04 IST: India 330-9 after 108.4 overs. Superb bowling by the best fast bowler on the planet. He wants the number one ranking back and this is what he should have done all along. Ishant hit him for a four earlier in the over and Steyn responded by dropping it a little short. Ishant just fended at it as AB took another catch. I Sharma c de Villiers b Steyn 4 (3b, 1x4) 20.00 IST: India 322-8 after 108.2 overs. Wow. Steyn gets his fifth wicket – sensational catch by AB – he stretched high above his head to take it one-handed. Stunning. Zaheer also makes a duck. Zaheer Khan c de Villiers b Steyn 0 (2b) 19.57 IST: India 321-7 after 107.5 overs. QUACK QUACK. Sir Jadeja hasn’t lasted too long. Kallis takes his 200th Test match catch to send him back. Duminy the bowler. He pitched it up, it turned, took the edge and Kallis took it low to his left. Kallis joins Dravid as the only players (non wicketkeepers) with over 200 catches. Wow. R Jadeja c Kallis b Duminy 0 (3b) 19.40 IST: India 320-6 after 106.4 overs. WICKET! Steyn strikes again. There is no stopping him today. Dhoni edged it to the slips yet again – that seems to be his favoured mode of dismissal abroad. It was a bit wide and Dhoni, unfortunately for India, chased it. MS Dhoni c Smith b Steyn 24 (40b, 3x4) 19.40 IST: India 320-5 after 106 overs. Rahul Dravid lays it out: “No pressure on the Indian batsmen to do anything creative or go over the top. There always seems to be a short ball or a log hop on offer. If you just wait long enough, you will get something. I think SA have to go the WI way – 4 fast bowlers and green tops.” 19.10 IST: India 286-5 after 99 overs. They have managed to get through the new ball pretty okay – they only lost Virat Kohli. But Graeme Smith’s decision to start the post-tea session with Peterson doesn’t quite make too much sense. It’s quite baffling. 18.39 IST: India 271-5. And that’s tea. SA dominated the session and if they can get Dhoni early, they might even bowl out India around 300. Given the position at the start of the day, that will be superb for the home team. India, on the other hand, need Dhoni and Rahane to stay in the middle for as long as possible. 18.28 IST: India 265-5. Another Indian batsman falls down the leg-side. AB de Villiers moved well and Morkel had a wicket. Kohli had looked very comfortable in the middle and this will hurt India. Superb session for SA – four wickets already. Just ten minutes left for tea, they would love another wicket. V Kohli c de Villiers b Morkel 46 (87b, 5x4) 17.48 IST: Rahane takes another blow – on the arm this time. Steyn is not making it easy for the batsmen but they are ready to rough it out. Kohli has looked pretty comfortable. Rahane has taken some blows to the body but in between, he has looked okay. Ind 245-4 17.32 IST: Rahane takes his eye off the ball and gets smacked on the helmet. Steyn the bowler. Boom! The right-hander has looked a little shaky. Philander – not Morkel – gets the new ball from the other end. 17.28 IST: India 224-4 after 80 overs. The new ball has been taken. Steyn is back and India needs to survive this. 17.10 IST: Petersen into the attack from one end, Philander from the other end. That can’t be a good idea. In the first hour, SA had all their best bowlers but now they have taken things off the pedal a little. India won’t mind this change. But the new ball is just 6 overs away. India 211-4. 17.03 IST: Vital period for India. The new ball is just 8 overs away – India can’t afford to lose any more wickets. Kohli and Rahane need to rough it out. Steyn is in the middle of a wonderful spell here – how much longer will he go on. 16.50 IST: No hat-trick for Steyn. He attacked the stumps and Kohli helped himself to a four. Ind 204-4. 16.45 IST: WICKET! Bowled! What did Rohit do here? He left the ball and bam! Clean bowled – it hit the middle stump. Terrible misjudgment from Rohit. There is no way that ball deserved to be left alone… superb reverse swing. Steyn on fire! He will come back to try and complete the hat-trick in the next over. India 199-4 RG Sharma b Steyn 0 (1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00 16.41 IST: WICKET! Steyn gets his second scalp of the day. A short ball into Vijay’s ribs, the openers tried to leave it but ended up gloving it to the keeper. Big, big wicket. This is just the start SA needed. India 199-3 M Vijay c de Villiers b Steyn 97 (309m, 226b, 18x4) 16.34 IST: WICKET! Steyn finally gets a wicket. Anger helps. This was beautiful though, pitched up, moving away a hint. Pujara had to play at it but he didn’t move his feet too much. Edged through to the keeper. Steyn’s reaction says it all – he wanted this bad. India 198-2 C Pujara c de Villiers b Steyn 70 (233m, 132b, 9x4)16.31 IST: After 66 overs, India 198-1. Vijay 86, Pujara 70. The pitch seems to have freshened up a little – more bounce than yesterday evening according to TV coverage. But not much movement. 16.29 IST: When Dale Steyn is angry, he covers his face. No lip-reading. He just did that. Vijay and Pujara need to be careful – Steyn is pretty angry today. 16.24 IST: Steyn working up some pace and he gets another edge that goes through the vacant third slips spot. Slowly but surely the speed is going up – 146 clicks now. 16.20 IST: Vijay continues to make his way to his first ton outside India. He has been steady, is still leaving a lot of the balls outside the off-stump. Though in the first over from Steyn there was a ball that flew through the gap between slips and gully. 16.15 IST: Nope. The pitch isn’t doing anything different from Day 1 – it’s still very good for batting, the batsmen can still hit through the line. 16.08 IST: The players are out and we’ve lost around 40 overs in this match already. The new ball is 19 overs way – so Pujara and Vijay will want to make the most of it. It will be interesting to see if the overnight rain spices things up a little. Morkel bowling the first over. 15.45 IST: The covers are off at Kingsmead but the umpires need to inspect the ground first and then they will let the rest of us common folk know when we might get some cricket in Durban. And they have done just that. Play is set to begin at 16.10 IST. 14.45 IST: No play this morning folks. Lunch will be taken at 11:30 am South Africa time, which is 3 pm India time. Nobody is sure when the rain will let up either. The Test looks destined to be a draw at this rate, which would be a huge waste after the thrills of the first Test. Covers are on There is no rain in Durban but the covers are on. Shaun Pollock is pretty sure that the covers will be off soon and we will get some play today. Still pretty overcast though. DAY ONE RECAP Pujara and Vijay dominated the opening day of the second Test, adding 140 runs after Shikhar Dhawan failed to get past 30 for the third straight innings. Morne Morkel, who surprisingly recovered from his a ligament tear in his ankle in time for the Test, showed he was operating at full capacity with a hostile opening spell that included getting Dhawan to nick one to third slip. [caption id=“attachment_1309457” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![AP](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/MuraliVijayvsSA-AP.jpg) Vijay was in fine form on day one. AP[/caption] After that though, it was all India. The umpires eventually took the players off for bad light just eight overs into the final session, but that was enough time for Vijay to crash Peterson to the boundary three times to move into the nervous nineties. At the other end, Steyn continued to hunt for reverse swing but with the light fading, he switched to bowling around the wicket in a bid to get the umpires to call time. Unfortunately for the decent sized crowd that showed up at Kingsmead, it worked. CLICK HERE  for the complete detailed day one report. -– End of day one — 19.01 IST: After 61 overs, India 181-1. Bad light has forced play to be called off for the day. India dominated the proceedings through Vijay and Pujara. Play will resume early on Day 2 – at 1300 hrs IST. Join us again tomorrow. 19.01 IST: After 61 overs, India 181-1. Last four overs, just two runs. Steyn has come round the wicket now and the angle is troubling both the batsmen. Some control at long last for SA. But the light has just got worse and the players have gone off the field due to bad light.18.37 IST: After 57 overs, India 179-1. Vijay and Pujara are playing Steyn with care but the opener has attacked Petersen (three fours in the last two overs). SA are seven overs behind the over-rate, they will need to catch up so they will need to bowl Petersen more. 18.00 IST: After 53 overs, India 163-1. And that’s tea. 27 overs, 87 runs at a RR 3.22 in the session. Superb stuff from Pujara and Vijay.18.00 IST: After 52 overs, India 160-1. Pujara got to yet another Test match fifty with a lovely four through the covers. He used his feet and got to the pitch of the ball and hit it through the gap. This is his fourth Test fifty and he looks good for a big one. He needed 97 balls and 7 fours to reach the mark. Steyn is getting some reverse swing now – we should have an interesting session of play now. The light remains a worry. 17.58 IST: After 47 overs, India 154-1. Really steady stuff from the Indian batsmen – they haven’t given SA a chance. The lights are on now.16.34 IST: After 45 overs, India 148-1. The sun has disappeared and it seems to have become cloudy now. Pujara and Vijay brought up their 100-run partnership is just 177 balls. 17.19 IST: After 42 overs, India 137-1. Petersen now in the attack as a desperate SA try to get another wicket. India have managed to blunt Dale Steyn in this Test series – he has now gone 61 overs since his last wicket and his spell in this match has been 10-2-44-0. 16.59 IST: After 39 overs, India 136-1. This is quite crazy. It’s almost too easy and SA are just letting it happen. The partnership between Pujara and Vijay is already worth 95 runs in just 25.5 overs.16.49 IST: After 34 overs, India 121-1. The runs continue to flow. SA look a little lost here. There is good bounce in the wicket but nothing more. However, someone like Steyn, who looked deadly in the ODIs should try something more. Maybe, he could learn a trick or two from someone like Mitchell Johnson. Vijay got to his 50 off 102 balls and is looking very confident now. 16.26 IST: After 31 overs, India 108-1. In the five overs after lunch, India have made 32 runs. This is a perfect start to the new session. 16.26 IST: After 30 overs, India 104-1. Wow. 16 runs in the last two overs. The line of the SA bowlers hasn’t been great and the Indian batsmen have capitalised. 16.15 IST: After 28 overs, India 88-1. The South African bowlers bowled a couple of loose deliveries after lunch and Pujara took full advantage of them. You just can’t bowl anything on his legs. It just asking for trouble. 15.30 IST: After 26 overs, India 76-1. Pujara 13, Vijay 33. And that’s lunch. Session belongs to India – Vijay and Pujara have looked solid. 15.07 IST: After 22 overs, India 64-1. Petersen into the attack and his first over passes without much ado. The first ball is a full toss and Vijay helps himself to an easy four. No runs after that. 15.04 IST: After 20 overs, India 56-1. Some release for India with a beautifully struck four from Vijay – he struggled all morning with plenty of balls going past the bat but this shot was exquisite. The current partnership has put on 15 runs in 41 balls. 14.59 IST: After 19 overs, India 52-1. Just two runs added in the last three overs. SA are turning on the heat now. Runs are a premium. Kallis is in operation now – in his last Test. 14.46 IST: After 16 overs, India 50-1. Pujara will take some time to get going. In the meanwhile, Vijay has to stay focused. This is a vital period for India, they will not want to lose another wicket. On the TV set, they show just how late Pujara plays the ball – it’s quite remarkable – right under his eyes.14.32 IST: WICKET! After 13.1 overs, India 41-1. Morkel gets SA the breakthrough, Dhawan caught in the slips. The left-hander was little late and a bit too hard at the ball. It zoomed to third slip at a good height. Easy catch. This is a big wicket – the left-hander is gone and this will allow the SA bowlers to settle into a better rhythm too. S Dhawan c Petersen b Morkel 29 (49b, 4x4) 14.20 IST: After 12 overs, India 40-0. Things are settling down a bit – a lot more short balls being directed at Dhawan by Steyn and Morkel now. Dhawan is ducking most of them now. For the moment, this is looking good for India.  14.07 IST: Nine overs gone, Steyn is working up some pace and there have been a few appeals but India will know that if they can get through the new ball they should be okay. Pujara and Kohli are in superb form. 14.00 IST: After 7 overs, India 33-0. Dhawan and Vijay are looking solid. But Dhawan still seems a little uncomfortable against the short ball. He hasn’t decided his game plan against it. But nothing in the wicket for the bowlers – the batsmen should enjoy this. Morne Morkel, who has made a remarkable recovery from the ankle injury, is into the attack now. 13.49 IST: The sun is out, the ball isn’t moving around too much. India have made their way to 23-0. Dhawan is still there in the middle – trying to not play too many shots. Vijay is looking solid. 13.43 IST: Steyn starts with a full delivery on offstump. Dhawan starts by crunching it straight down the ground. The quest for India’s first ever series-win in South Africa has begun. 13.34 IST: Steyn starts with a full delivery on offstump. Dhawan starts by crunching it straight down the ground. The quest for India’s first ever series-win in South Africa has begun.  13.10 IST: India have won the toss and will bat first. Jadeja is in for Ashwin while Robin Peterson comes in for Imran Tahir. The biggest news though, is that Morne Morkel has recovered in time to play this game, which is a big boost for South Africa. Here are the playing XIs: India: M Vijay, S Dhawan, C Pujara, V Kohli, RG Sharma, A Rahane, MS Dhoni, R Jadeja, I Sharma, Z Khan, M Shami. Sout Africa: G Smith, A Petersen, H Amla, J Kallis, AB de Villiers, F du Plessis, JP Duminy, R Peterson, V Philander, D Steyn, M Morkel Preview: After sharing the honours in a thrilling draw, India and South Africa will renew their exciting battle for supremacy in the series-deciding second and final cricket Test which promises to be another epic encounter starting in Durban today. Getty Images[/caption] The opening Test between the number one (South Africa) and number two (India) Test teams turned out to be the most perfect advertisement for Test cricket giving five days of an engaging clash. In the end, South Africa were left needing just eight runs for what would have been one of the most memorable Test wins of all time. India, on the other hand, were left wondering as to what turned the fortunes so drastically after four days of domination. At Kingsmead, on Boxing Day, the two sides will go head-to-head in a decider that is more than just another five-day game — it will also be Jacques Kallis’ last Test match. Ever since this tour got embroiled in a battle between the Board of Control for Cricket in India and Cricket South Africa for off-field matters, it has even been about bragging rights.
