As it happened: Trott, Bell help England take charge

16:27 pm England 161-3 after 79 overs, Trott 66, Bell 24 Slow day but England lead by 165 runs with 7 wickets remaining. In total, 91.5 overs were bowled today and 190 runs were scores for the loss of 4 wickets. 16:20 pm England 159-3 after 77 overs, Trott 64, Bell 24 England lead by 163 runs with 7 wickets remaining. Yawn! A really boring game – a pitch with no bounce means death to the game. The cameras pan on to a guy sleeping in the stands. 15:55 pm England 144-3 after 50 overs, Trott 50, Bell 11 50 runs off 85 balls for Trott and Bell. Great partnership and it’s got England out of a tough spot. The lead is up to 148 runs and fast going out of reach for India. 15:28 pm England 130-3 after 64 overs, Trott 50, Bell 11 The wicket remains good for batting but India have a chance. If they can get two more wickets by the close of play, they will go into the last day believing they have a decent chance. England now lead by 134 runs with 7 wickets remaining. 14:56 pm England 95-3 after 55.5 overs, Trott 29 Pietersen left it and it crashed into the off-stump. Bad error of judgment – it gives India some hope. https://twitter.com/Cricket_Mann/status/280244598348066816 K Pietersen b Jadeja 6 (30b, 1x4) 14:44 pm England 90-2 after 52 overs, Trott 29, Pietersen 2: It’s slow. It’s boring. It’s dull. Enough said. England have crawled to their total and India have been powerless to get them to do anything else. 14:07 pm England 81-2 after 46.4 overs, Trott 22: Compton just stood still after he was given out. The England management was looking at the replays immediately. He took a really long stride forward. But it did hit in line. And more replays show that there was bat involved too. So thats two out of two – bad decisions that is. By the way, it’s tea too. England lead by 85 runs with 8 wickets remaining. NRD Compton lbw b Ojha 34 (135b 1x4 0x6) SR: 25.18 13:42 pm England 73-1 after 38 overs, Compton 32, Trott 16: Trott has helped England get a move on. They are now 77 runs ahead and in charge. But India know that a few wickets and they are back in this match. It still isn’t over. 13:17 pm England 48-1 after 29.5 overs, Compton 28: Cook gone for 13 as the drinks come on to the ground. Ashwin gets India the breakthrough. Cook didn’t look too happy though. The ball turned and went past the bat but it seemed to have missed the edge though. Dhoni took the catch easily. India won’t mind… let’s get a move on now. Please. A Cook c Dhoni b Ashwin 13 (93b 1x4) 12:55 pm England 43-0 after 27 overs, Cook 11, Compton 25: If you had fallen asleep and just woken up, you haven’t missed much. The spinners have been pretty ineffective. And England’s batsmen are content to bat on and on. 12:16 pm England 19-0 after 15 overs, Cook 1, Compton 16: No change in approach from the England batsmen. India need a wicket or two to throw this match open. https://twitter.com/NHoultCricket/status/280208929441603584 12:06 pm And the players are walking back on. 11:30 am England 17-0 after 13 overs, Cook 1, Compton 14: That’s lunch. Really slow stuff but England want to ensure they don’t lose this game. So they will bat out time and then attack once they feel pretty safe. That might take a while. 11:13 am [caption id=“attachment_559117” align=“alignright” width=“380”] ![Compton and Cook haven't given India a chance. PTI](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Compton_Cook_PTI1.jpg "Compton and Cook haven't given India a chance. PTI") Compton and Cook haven’t given India a chance. PTI[/caption] England 8-0 after 10 overs, Cook 1, Compton 6: So slow and boring. But England know that a draw will help them win their first series in India in 28 years. India have to make them do something different. 10:55 am England 7-0 after 5 overs, Cook 0, Compton 6: Still nothing major happening. England lead by 11 runs. 10:43 am England 0-0 after 1 overs: India don’t really need to do anything different. They need a few quick wickets to put the pressure back on England. 10:30 am Exactly one hour into the morning session – at the stroke of drinks, Dhoni called Ashwin and Ishant back into the dressing room. India trail by 4 but this match is wide open. Will England go for a win or will they play for a draw? Exactly five and a half sessions remaining in the the Nagpur Test. It’s a good declaration and will make for a pretty crazy last day of cricket if England decide to make a match of this. https://twitter.com/Sports_Greats/status/280173590769434624 10:27 am Almost one hour into the morning session, India still trail by 8 runs. At the start of play, the lead was 33. Dhoni is padded up in the dressing room. 10:14 am India 317/9 after 140.1 overs: And Ojha falls. The ball turned, caught Ojha’s gloves and rolled on to the stumps. Still no declaration. India trail by 13 runs with 1 wicket remaining in the 1st innings. P Ojha b Panesar 3 (32b) 10:06 am India trail by 17 runs now. The host have reached 313-8 but they need to get a move on. It’s not going to be easy to bowl out England. Right now, India are just wasting time. Even Ganguly feels that India should be trying to hit at least one four every over. 09:59 am Strange tactics by India here. They are playing to win right? But right now, the batsmen are just not trying to playing shots. Someone has to… 09:50 am India 301-8 after 135 overs, Ashwin 11, Ojha 0 India have gone past 300 – who would have thought that possible after the hosts were reduced to 87-4. Ashwin can bat but he will need support, will he get it? Or will England wrest away a tiny advantage going into the second innings. It might be very crucial. They could have been in a much better position after Kohli and Dhoni put on a massive partnership. It was a fifth-wicket stand of 198 - India’s second highest against England - the highest is 214 between Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri at Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 1984-85. Some more stats: # Virat Kohli (103 off 295 balls) has posted his third Test century - one each against New Zealand, Australia and England. # Kohli has registered a strike rate of 34.91 - his worst when he has made 30 or more in a Test innings. # Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 99 took 246 balls - his first instance of facing 200 balls or more in a Test innings. Kohli believes India has a chance After scoring a patient century under pressure to lead a remarkable Indian fightback against England in the fourth Test today, Virat Kohli said this was the innings he had been waiting to play for some time. “I was waiting for this one long innings. I was working hard for the last one month. You can’t keep performing every innings and there will be ups and downs. But you need to stay positive whether you do well or not. That’s what I did,” said Kohli after the third day’s play when he scored 103.
