It all started with Virat Kohli’s brilliant innings of 119 (181 balls, 18x4). Slotting into the No 4 position vacated by Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli showed that he had the grit, determination and the strokes to save his team’s innings — justly compared to the Master Blaster himself in features on the following day. If Kohli was the star with the bat, then Vernon Philander was SA’s hero with the ball. The pacer took 4/61 in 27 overs and followed it up with a fine half century (59 off 86) too. Getty Images[/caption] [caption id=“attachment_1302061” align=“alignleft” width=“940”]
And then came Ishant Sharma’s chance to shine. The Indian pacer removed Alviro Peterson, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn from the equation in SA’s 1st innings. He was ably supported by Zaheer Khan who also got four wickets. Getty Images[/caption] [caption id=“attachment_1302065” align=“alignleft” width=“940”]
Kohli took the plaudits in the 1st innings but Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane had supported the Delhi-ite with solid knocks too. However, Pujara put his disappointing run-out to the back of his mind after scoring a classy knock of 153 runs. Kohli was again the partner on the other end and missed out on a second century by four runs as India took a 457-run lead. At the start of day five — India needed eight wickets and SA 320 runs to win the match. It was evenly poised if anything but India looked the more confident side. However, the home team’s middle-order responded brilliantly and AB de Villiers was in the middle of it all with 103 off 168 balls. But it was this man who made a bigger difference. With India needing six wickets when the teams came out after lunch on day five, Du Plessis started having a go and ended with a solid 134 to set up a nail-biting finish. The day ended with SA needing eight runs and Philander and Dale Steyn holding out for a draw. Getty Images[/caption]
