ICC's CEC proposes two-tier Test system, 13-team associate ODI league

New Delhi: The ICC Chief Executives Committee (CEC) has proposed a two-tier Test league along with a 13-team league for 50-over ODI qualification system. The two-day CEC conference concluded in Dubai on Friday and the proposals by the CEC will be put across to the all powerful ICC Board that will meet on Saturday. According to sources in CEC meeting, it has been learnt that the two-tier Test league would have the top nine teams as per ICC rankings in the elite league while the likes of Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland will get a chance to showcase their skills in the second tier with a few other associate nations. A regional T20 competition is also being mulled for the World T20 competition. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) joint secretary Amitabh Chaudhary earlier attended the CEC meeting after getting approval for the same from the Supreme Court of India. It remains to be seen whether he gets to attend Saturday’s meeting as one of the two representatives of a member board. As per ICC constitution, a board can be represented by two members, wherein one is a ‘director’ and the other is an ‘observer’, with the latter having no say in the discussions that takes place in the meeting. According to reports, Committee of Administrators (COA) member Vikram Limaye is expected to attend the meeting, which raises speculations over the Indian board’s second representative, with names such as treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhary and CEO Rahul Johri also doing the rounds.
