ICC World T20, Sri Lanka vs West Indies as it happened: Fletcher's half-century powers Windies to comfortable win

That’s it! West Indies beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets, a comprehensive win. The crowd wanted Gayle, but West Indies didn’t even need him to chase down the modest target of 123. Andre Fletcher starred in West Indies’ innings with his unbeaten 84 off 64 (6 fours, 5 sixes). He stayed throughout the innings.

He’s also the man of the match. “No one can take Gayle’s job,” he rightly says before being presented the MotM award.

Gayle comes out to greet the crowd, a lovely gesture from the master-entertainer. Crowd yearned for a Gaylestorm, but it wasn’t needed on the night.

This is a crucial win for West Indies, they now win two on the trot and now have a solid footing in their group. Sri Lanka left much to be desired.

After 18 overs,West Indies 116/3 ( Andre Fletcher 84 , Andre Russell 10)

This has been a ridiculous night for Sri Lanka. Another sitter of a catch dropped. Russell survives, Sri Lanka just seem too desperate to not let Gayle come on, they might’ve let off their sights from the real purpose; to win. Six off the over. 7 more needed off 12  balls.

March 20, 2016, 22:34:55 (IST)

After 17 overs,West Indies 110/3 ( Andre Fletcher 79 , Andre Russell 9)

What an innings this has been from Fletcher. He sends a full toss straight down the ground that pierces the 2 fielders at long-on and long-off, they both waiting for the other one to make a move to stop the racing ball. But neither of them did. 11 off the over. just 13 more needed off 18 balls.

So, apparently the gods do not want Gayle to bat! Fletcher is presumably caught behind, but the third umpire rules that the edged ball just bounced in front of Chandimal’s gloves. That seems harsh, the ball seems to land on the edge of his gloves. But Fletcher stays, he’s on 72 off 52.

After 15 overs,West Indies 94/3 ( Andre Fletcher 71 , Andre Russell 4)

Fletcher is not going to make the Bengaluru crowd happy, because the way he’s playing, Gayle won’t be required at all. Back to back sixes off Siriwardana. One flies to long-on, the other to the moon!

March 20, 2016, 22:16:46 (IST)
Fletcher’s 50 came up too in the last over. 53 off 39, 5 fours, 3 sixes
March 20, 2016, 22:14:09 (IST)

After 13 overs,West Indies 72/3 ( Andre Fletcher 53 , Andre Russell 0)

OUT! Ramdin is bowled! Siriwardana strikes. Ramdin attempts a bizarre shot he shouldn’t have, misses, and the ball kisses his stumps.

Gayle wants to join the action, he comes out with the bat wto send the crowd in a frenzy, “GAYLE! GAYLE!”, but the 3rd umpire stops him. He can only bat after 2 more wickets fall or after 11 more minutes. Much the crowd’s disappointment, Gayle walks back to the dressing room. This stadium is going to erupt if he finally does come out to bat.

Russell comes out amid chants of “WE WANT GAYLE!!!!”

March 20, 2016, 22:02:56 (IST)

After 11 overs,West Indies 63/2 ( Andre Fletcher 46 , Denesh Ramdin (W) 3)

Fletcher has played the protagonist for West Indies with the bat. He started off with a boom, has clamed down a bit and settled. He now looks comfortable. He shuffles towards leg to make room and sends a searing drive through the off-side.

After 9 overs,West Indies 54/2 ( Andre Fletcher 40 , Denesh Ramdin (W) 0)

OUT! New man in Samuels is gone, and a slow bowler strikes. Samuesl dances down the track to Siriwardana, swings and misses completely, and is stumped out by Chandimal.

March 20, 2016, 21:54:10 (IST)

After 8 overs,West Indies 52/1 ( Andre Fletcher 39 , Marlon Samuels 2)

A brilliant over from Vandersay. He’s proving to be quite an addition to the Sri Lankan team. Superb. Just 7 off the over, and that includes 4 dots, a single and six. The six from Fletcher made the crowd happy, but those dots deserve more mention. Excellent bowling.

March 20, 2016, 21:45:32 (IST)
OUT! Finally a wicket for Sri Lanka. Johnson Charles departs, new man in the team Vandersay has his say as his ball takes an edge off Charles’ bat and goes onto the stumps
March 20, 2016, 21:41:36 (IST)

After 4 overs,West Indies 30/0 ( Andre Fletcher 22 , Johnson Charles 7)

Vandersay brought into the attack and immediately brings a check to WI’s flying start. He almost got Charles, but Kapugedera ran in fast towards his slog at deep mid wicket and dropped a sitter. This just made Sri Lanka’s day go from bad to worse.

March 20, 2016, 21:34:34 (IST)

After 2 overs,West Indies 23/0 ( Andre Fletcher 22 , Johnson Charles 1)

Fletcher has delivered on the crowd’s demands. They wanted Gayle, but he’s been no less. This time he sends another rocket into the stands at long-off and then reaches out to a wide delivery and sweeps it on the leg side for four. West Indies in a hurry to finish this one. Grim beginning for Sri Lanka.

March 20, 2016, 21:29:58 (IST)

After 1 overs,West Indies 13/0 ( Andre Fletcher 12 , Johnson Charles 1)

There’s no Gayle, but there are fireworks, right from the first over. Fletcher taking on the responsibility to cause damage and entertain the crowd. First he puts a drive through mid-wicket for four, Then sends Mathews staright down the ground, into the crowd. Straight, huge six.

JUST IN: Chris Gayle won’t be opening for West Indies due to injury.

Badree was brilliant on the night.

March 20, 2016, 21:09:15 (IST)

After 20 overs,Sri Lanka 122/9 ( Jeffrey Vandersay 0 , Dushmantha Chameera 0)

OUT! Perera’s resistance comes to an end. He sends a low full toss only till Russell at long on. He departs on 40 off 29 balls.

Sri Lanka manage a measly 122. Two wickets and just 4 runs from that last over from Bravo. Badree ends up with 3 wickets, Bravo with 2. Chris Gayle isn’t opening, which could only delay a WI win. But it’s hard to expect the result to be any different.

OUT! Herath is run-out in the hunt of a quick single. Alert work from Bravo.
March 20, 2016, 21:00:57 (IST)

After 19 overs,Sri Lanka 118/7 ( Thisara Perera 38 , Rangana Herath 2)

OUT! Kulasekara departs. Swing and a miss, the ball finds his leg stump, his bat finds nothing. Herath comes in. Just one over left now, and this is not yet a respectable total.

Perera, on the other hand, has been brilliant on the night. His has been a fighting innings. His four, slammed to mid-wicket takes him to 37. He deserves a half-century.

March 20, 2016, 20:56:19 (IST)

After 18 overs,Sri Lanka 110/6 ( Thisara Perera 33 , Nuwan Kulasekara 6)

A few boundaries in the over for Sri Lanka. 16 off it. That included Perera’s four and his huge swing for six over deep square leg. Perera is the silver lining of Sri Lanka’s innings.

After 17 overs,Sri Lanka 94/6 ( Thisara Perera 22 , Nuwan Kulasekara 2)

Perera and Kulasekara on the crease to save Sri Lanka the blushes. Just 3 overs left, even a whirlwind spell of scoring won’t get them to a challenging total.

March 20, 2016, 20:47:15 (IST)
OUT! Mathews departs. The captain’s innings comes to an end after a valiant fight. Weird dismissal, Bravo’s ball is a high full-toss and takes an edge of Mathews’ bat. Mathews is just trying to duck. Ramdin takes an easy catch.
March 20, 2016, 20:43:13 (IST)

After 16 overs,Sri Lanka 91/5 ( Angelo Mathews (C) 20 , Thisara Perera 21)

Sri Lanka’s run rate is just 5.62. Just four overs left now. Sri Lanka needs to fire now.

March 20, 2016, 20:40:58 (IST)

After 15 overs,Sri Lanka 81/5 ( Angelo Mathews (C) 18 , Thisara Perera 15)

Perera goes straight down the ground again. Apart from his two straight drives for four, the last two overs have been quite dry for Sri Lanka.

Badree’s brilliant spell

March 20, 2016, 20:32:35 (IST)

After 14 overs,Sri Lanka 73/5 ( Angelo Mathews (C) 16 , Thisara Perera 9)

Perera’s straight drive off Russell in the over has been Sri Lanka’s brightest spot on the night. It was exquisite. Does nothing much to ease their troubles, but was very easy on the eye.

After 12 overs,Sri Lanka 65/5 ( Angelo Mathews (C) 14 , Thisara Perera 3)

Just 11 runs off the last two overs, no boundaries. Lankans finding it hard to score here, but Mathews trying his best to build a partnership with Perera. They’ve been rotating strike, but the quickly need to find the big ones to make a game out of this.

March 20, 2016, 20:20:11 (IST)

Look who’s happy

March 20, 2016, 20:18:40 (IST)

After 10 overs,Sri Lanka 54/5 ( Angelo Mathews (C) 7 , Thisara Perera 2)

Horrendous first 10 overs for the Lankans. After a good couple of overs, it’s all been downhill. Their last batsmen have departed on 0,6 and 5. Mathews and Perera have a big task at hand. To pose an asking total from here for WI will be one tough task.

March 20, 2016, 20:12:23 (IST)

After 9 overs,Sri Lanka 49/5 ( Angelo Mathews (C) 3 , Thisara Perera 1)

What an over from Badree, two wickets off it and just 2 runs given. Perera the new man in with the bat. It’s up to him and Angelo to rebuild, otherwise this won’t see the end of the 20th over.

Bangalore, India:  Troubled champions Sri Lanka will need to tame a rampant Chris Gayle as they face the West Indies in the first major test of their defence of cricket’s Twenty20 trophy Sunday.

The Jamaican, who lit up the first World T20 in 2007, showed his powers remain undimmed when he smashed a 47-ball century to lead the West Indies to victory over England on Wednesday. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, winners of the last World T20 in Bangladesh two years ago, have been badly weakened since the retirements of star batsmen Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. [caption id=“attachment_2686696” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]Chris Gayle unleashed a Gaylestorm against South Africa. AFP Chris Gayle unleashed a Gaylestorm against South Africa. AFP[/caption] Slumping to eighth in the T20 rankings, Sri Lanka are also in turmoil after changing their coach and captain in recent weeks and following a disastrous showing at the Asia Cup. Sri Lanka were given a morale booster with victory over lowly Afghanistan in their first Super 10 outing on Thursday, when veteran opener Tillakaratne Dilshan smashed 83 off 56 balls. But they face a much tougher test in Gayle who unleashed a succession of sixes during the West Indies’ stunning six-wicket win over England. Captain Angelo Mathews, who replaced injured veteran bowler Lasith Malinga as skipper on tournament eve, was upbeat, saying his side was capable of “doing anything” if they worked together. “No matter who you play, you have to be positive. We aren’t looking too far ahead, if we click we can do anything,” he said. West Indies coach Phil Simmons has sounded a warning to opponents, saying he expected Gayle to bat in 15 of the 20 overs of every match at this World T20, to set the side up for victory. “Once you bat 15 overs we are someway near to the target (either) we are setting or chasing,” Simmons said. He said the 36-year-old, who hit the format’s first international century in 2007, should be placed alongside great Viv Richards on the list of destructive batsmen from the Caribbean. The West Indies are one of the weakest teams in Test cricket but they remain a force in the shortest format, winning the T20 in 2012 and ranked second in the world. Teams Sri Lanka: Angelo Mathews (captain), Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Rangana Herath, Shehan Jayasuriya, Chamara Kapugedera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Suranga Lakmal, Thisara Perera, Sachithra Senanayake, Dasun Shanaka, Milinda Siriwardana, Lahiru Thirimanne. West Indies: Darren Sammy (captain), Samuel Badree, Sulieman Benn, Carlos Braithwaite, Dwayne Bravo, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Ashley Nurse, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Jerome Taylor, Evin Lewis.   AFP
