How India won the hosting rights for 141st International Olympic Committee Session

India will be hosting the prestigious 141st session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from October 15 to 17, 2023. India last hosted the IOC meeting in 1983 and it makes a return to the country after 40 years. The IOC Session is important as it is a meeting of all the members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board and is also attended by a selection of members from the IOC members.

Usually, important decisions regarding host cities for upcoming events, inclusion or exclusion of sports and federations and changes in the Olympic Charter are made at the IOC Sessions.

For India, the IOC Session, which coincides with the nation’s 76th year of Independence, is an opportunity to highlight the role of sport in the country and celebrate its contribution to the Olympic Movement.

India won the hosting rights for IOC meeting in 2022 under the leadership of Nita M. Ambani, the first woman to be elected as an IOC Member from the country.

We take a look at how India won the hosting rights for 141st IOC session.

— An Indian delegation, led by Nita M. Ambani, the then Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Dr Narinder Batra, the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mr Anurag Singh Thakur, and India’s first individual Olympic gold medallist Mr Abhinav Bindra, presented a compelling proposal on Mumbai’s candidature during the 139th IOC Session, held on the sidelines of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

— Mumbai was elected as the host of the 141st IOC Session by an overwhelming 99 percent of the votes from the delegates participating in the process, with 75 members endorsing its candidature to host the IOC Session in 2023.

The IOC Session in India will be hosted in Mumbai from 15 to 17 October, with its Opening Ceremony to be held on 14 October. It will be preceded by the meetings of the IOC Executive Board on 12, 13 and 14 October. The session will be hosted at the state-of-the-art Jio World Convention Centre.
