Preview: A day after going down to the United States of America in their opener, the India women’s hockey team will face New Zealand in their second Pool B match of the FIH Olympic Qualifiers in Ranchi on Sunday. India, led by Savita Punia, looked toothless against USA and would look to put up a more improved performance against the Kiwis. It was in the second quarter when India gave away the lead as Abigail Tamer struck in the 16th minute to hand the advantage to the Americans. The American defence, especially their goalkeeper Kelsey Bing, was rock-solid and never allowed India a way back into the game. So much so that attempts from Navneet Kaur, Sangita Kumari and Deepika were blocked well by the USA goalkeeper. India also lacked attacking intent in the absence of the injured Vandana Katariya and never looked like they could make breakthroughs in the game. The aftermath of the defeat means that India have no option but to win against New Zealand on Sunday and Italy, their other opponents in Pool B, on Tuesday.
