The Indian men’s hockey team will be aiming to avenge their defeat at the hands of Germany in the Paris Olympics in August when the two teams meet less than 24 hours from now. Three years after defeating the Germans 5-4 in the Tokyo Olympics bronze-medal playoff, the Harmanpreet Singh-led side suffered a 3-2 loss in an equally thrilling semi-final at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in the French capital.
Germany would go on to win silver in the Paris Olympics after Netherlands defeated them 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the gold medal match. India, who had beaten Australia for the first time in five decades earlier in the tournament, would go on to hand Spain a 2-1 defeat to win a second consecutive Olympic bronze medal.
Team India was heavily backed to win the Asian Champions Trophy in China last month after their Olympic bronze, and they would end up living up to their favourites billing by beating China 1-0 in the final and winning the tournament for a record-extending fifth time.
India now face the Germans, who also happen to be reigning world champions in men’s hockey besides being 12-time Olympic medallists, in a two-match series that takes place this week.
