Gujarat Lions in IPL:
Batting first: Matches-8, Won-1, Lost-7
Chasing: Matches- 10, Won-8, Lost-2
Overall: Matches-18, Won-9, Lost-9
This was the fourth loss for Gujarat Lions against Sunrisers Hyderabad from four matches in IPL.
Rashid Khan wins the 'Man of the Match' award for his figures of 3/19 from four overs, aside from effecting a run-out!
David Warner becomes the fourth player to score 7000 runs in T20s. The others are Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum and Brad Hodge.
Most fifty-plus scores by captains in IPL:
27 - Gautam Gambhir
23 - Virat Kohli
17 - DAVID WARNER*
16 - MS Dhoni
After 16 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 140/1 ( David Warner (C) 76 , Moises Henriques 52)
SIX! Warner smashes Baroka down the ground for a majestic straight six to end Gujarat's misery! What a way for the captain to bring up the winning hit, as Sunrisers Hyderabad romp home with nine wickets and 27 deliveries to spare!
FIFTY for Henriques, his second consecutive, and he ensures that he gets to the milestone before the hosts romp away to an easy win! Gets there in 38 balls, having hit six fours. Also brings up the 100-run partnership!
After 15 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 131/1 ( David Warner (C) 70 , Moises Henriques 49)
Kaushik into his final over. Warner gets a top-edge while looking to guide the ball down leg side. Five singles in the over, with Hyderabad now one big hit away from a win.
After 14 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 126/1 ( David Warner (C) 68 , Moises Henriques 46)
Warner takes a single at the start of the over to move to 65, completing 7,000 runs in T20 cricket! Six runs scored in the over, with Hyderabad now cantering along to a big win at the moment.
Gujarat Lions coach Brad Hodge earlier hinted at Ravindra Jadeja playing the next game. That definitely will be a huge boost for the struggling Lions.
After 13 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 120/1 ( David Warner (C) 64 , Moises Henriques 44)
SIX! Warner is giving Baroka a rather rough debut, smashing him over his head for a big one down the ground! The win looks like a mere formality now. Five singles scored in the remaining deliveries, with 11 coming off the over.
After 12 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 109/1 ( David Warner (C) 55 , Moises Henriques 42)
Thampi into his second over. Warner starts off by getting his sixth boundary, flicking it towards fine-leg to get to his half-century, and return to form after a month of turmoil during the India Test series. Thampi, visibly under pressure, concedes a wide next ball. Eight runs off the over.
After 11 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 101/1 ( David Warner (C) 49 , Moises Henriques 41)
Kaushik bowls the 11th over. Bit short again. Henriques goes after him. Cuts and then plays one delicately for two consecutibe boundaries. SRH motoring along.
FIFTY for David Warner, and he gets to the milestone with his sixth boundary of his innings, guiding the Thampi delivery towards fine-leg! Takes 31 balls to get to the mark!
After 10 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 89/1 ( David Warner (C) 48 , Moises Henriques 30)
Basil Thampi in the attack now, bowling right arm medium pace and is cover driven by Warner for a four off the first ball. Imperious that. The second ball is cut behind square for another four. Harsh welcome to the big league for Thampi. The third delivery is a slower one, but way outside off, and it is called wide. An attacking shot off the fourth ball, but goes to the fielder at point. Some amusement among the spectators as Thampi's shoes come off as he completes the over and Warner picks it up and hands it to him, while running between the wickets. Good sportsman spirit there. 13 off that over. An expensive one. 47 to win at the halfway stage
After 9 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 76/1 ( David Warner (C) 37 , Moises Henriques 29)
Kaushik continues. Bit uppish from Warner on the fifth ball. Goes to the extra cover fielder on the bounce. Not a lot happening in that over otherwise. Four runs taken by Warner and Henriques. Strategic timeout taken after that over.
After 8 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 72/1 ( David Warner (C) 35 , Moises Henriques 27)
Baroka replaces Kulkarni. Henriques plays an attacking shot off the first ball. A pull that goes on the bounce to the deep square leg fielder. The SRH batsmen take ones and twos in the over. Warner and Henriques are doing it easy. Five runs from that over. The defending champs are goign ar nine runs per over.
This start from SRH shows us that this is a very decent batting surface and just how badly the Lions underperformed with the bat. This all Indian bowling line up is severely short of star quality and they were always going to struggle against the likes of Warner and Henriques. With this very small total they have no chance.
After 7 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 67/1 ( David Warner (C) 32 , Moises Henriques 25)
Left arm Chinaman bowler, with an unusual action, Shivil Kaushik into the attack now for the seventh over. He had been made a target by Gambhir and Lynn in the last match against KKR, and now Henriques goes after him, getting a boundary off the second over. Plays a couple of more atacking shots. Kaushik it seems is bowling a bit too short and will have to address that if he is going to trouble the batsmen.
After 6 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 59/1 ( David Warner (C) 32 , Moises Henriques 18)
Final over of powerplay, with Dhawal Kulkarni getting introduced into the attack in this over. 50 comes up in this over with a couple of singles, before Henriques goes ballistic with a consecutive boundaries! Another good over for SRH, with 11 coming off it.
After 5 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 48/1 ( David Warner (C) 31 , Moises Henriques 8)
Debutant Tejas Baroka introduced into the attack in the fifth over, and Warner welcomes him into the league with back-to-back boundaries, which helps lift some of the pressure off his back. Interestingly, Baroka started off with a wrong 'un. Eight off the over.
Overseas players to score 1000-plus runs in T20s on an Indian ground:
Chris Gayle (M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore)
Michael Hussey (Chepauk, Chennai)
DAVID WARNER (Hyderabad (RGS))
After 4 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 40/1 ( David Warner (C) 23 , Moises Henriques 8)
Praveen into his second over, and gets the breakthrough straightaway after Dhawan top-edges a full toss towards McCullum at cover. Henriques walks out now, and gets a boundary in his third delivery, driving a full toss between cover and extra-cover. Eight off the over along with a wicket.
OUT! Praveen draws first blood for Gujarat, removing Dhawan for 9! Snaps the opening partnership at the 32-run mark!
Dhawan looked to guide the Praveen full-toss towards leg side, though he brings his bat down a little too early, and ends up top-edging the ball up over to McCullum, who runs in from cover, and is not one to drop such easy chances.
Shikhar Dhawan c McCullum b Praveen 9(9)
After 3 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 32/0 ( David Warner (C) 23 , Shikhar Dhawan 9)
Raina continues from the other end. SIX! Dhawan is fairly settled at the crease by now, and dances down the track to loft the ball towards long-on! Warner does the same three deliveries later, this time hitting it straight down the ground for a flat one! The SRH captain extends Raina's misery by pulling the last ball majestically towards cow-corner for the third six of the over, with 21 coming off it!
After 2 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 11/0 ( David Warner (C) 9 , Shikhar Dhawan 2)
Praveen Kumar into the second over. FOUR! That's more like the Warner that we know! Shuffles to his left, and lofts it over the umpire's head for a one-bounce for! First boundary of the innings. Eight runs scored in the second over.
Did you know?
Praveen Kumar now holds the record of conceding most runs in IPL. He went past the record of Harbhajan Singh (3119 runs).
After 1 over,Sunrisers Hyderabad 3/0 ( David Warner (C) 2 , Shikhar Dhawan 1)
David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan starts for SRH and Raina makes a bold move, taking the mantle of bowling the first over. He beats Dhawan in flight with his fourth delivery. Only three runs from the first over.
After the England Test, cricket is back at Wankhede, with MI and KKR to clash later this evening. And as always, the buzz is palpable, a sea of blue jerseys are thronging towards the stadium. The opening ceremony will start soon. The Burger King outlet adjacent to the Churchgate station is currently full. People are having their food before the real fest inside the stadium. Or of them tells me, "Match accha hona chahiye bas."
Still a little over two hours to go for the Mumbai Indians-Kolkata Knight Riders match, but they have started lining up in queues outside Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai
Lowest totals defended at Hyderabad (RG) in IPL:
126 by SRH v PW in 2013
132 by DC v RCB in 2012
136 by SRH v RR in 2013
After 20 overs,Gujarat Lions 135/7 ( Praveen Kumar 7 , Basil Thampi 13)
Bhuvi bowling the last over, and Praveen hands the strike to Thampi first ball. Thampi goes for a wild swing in the second delivery, misses and sets off for a run nevertheless. Singles gathered in the next three deliveries, with the batsmen looking for a big hit on reach occasion. Dot to finish the innings, as Gujarat finish on a less-than-impressive 135/7 at the end of 20 overs. Can their pace attack, which can arguably be described as weak, keep the Hyderabad batting lineup at bay? Let's find out!
After 19 overs,Gujarat Lions 130/7 ( Praveen Kumar 4 , Basil Thampi 12)
Debutant Thampi walks out to bat alongside fellow pacer Praveen Kumar. The latter survives twice in the third ball, with the ball landing just short of extra-cover, with Praveen nearly getting run-out in the same delivery after setting off for a single. SIX! Thampi thumps this one over wide long-on! Can he get a few extra runs on the board that could help his side regain some of the lost confidence? Gets two doubles in the remainder of the over, with 13 coming off it.
After 18 overs,Gujarat Lions 117/7 ( Praveen Kumar 2 , Basil Thampi 1)
Nehra bowls his final over, and manages to get rid of the last threat in Karthik, which effectively eliminates any remaining threat in the Gujarat line-up. Dhawal's run-out in the fourth ball is an added bonus, as the match seems set in Hyderabad's favour now.
It was the bowling that let down the Lions badly in their first match, it has been their batting that has been absolutely appalling today. Credit needs to be given the how well the SRH bowlers have played, but this is a shocking display from a star-studded batting line up. The big issue seems to one of balance. Having four openers in the top six just isn’t working so far. A better balance would be to leave out one of the four overseas batsmen and bring in James Faulkner who can bowl and also has a decent record batting in the latter stages of the innings.
OUT! And the collapse has begun! Dhawal tries setting off for a quick single in the fourth ball of the over, but it is Rashid Khan once again who is involved in a dismissal, this time in the form of a superb throw that results in a run-out. Gujarat 115/7.
Dhawal Kulkarni run out (Rashid) 1(2)
OUT! Now it's Karthik's turn to head back to the dugout, as he gets a faint outside edge while looking for a ramp shot off Nehra's bowling. Gujarat reeling at 114/6 now.
Dinesh Karthik c Ojha b Nehra 30(32)
After 17 overs,Gujarat Lions 113/5 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 30 , Dhawal Kulkarni 0)
Bhuvi back into the attack now, and the ploy works wonderfully in Hyderabad's favour as he gets rid of the dangerous striker in Smith with a slower ball, conceding just three runs in the remainder of the over. Near run-out in the final ball after a bit of mix-up between Karthik and new batsman Dhawal Kulkarni.
OUT! Just when Smith and Karthik were starting to look dangerous, in comes Bhuvneshwar who breaks the stand. Smith looks to slog a slower ball, but doesn't get enough distance, as he gets caught by the substitute fielder at midwicket. Gujarat 113/5
Dwayne Smith c Shankar (sub) b Bhuvneshwar 37(27)
Fine recovery by Smith and Karthik. Gujarat's problem ironically could be its strong batting line-up where onus is passed on to the next man— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) April 9, 2017
After 16 overs,Gujarat Lions 110/4 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 28 , Dwayne Smith 36)
Cutting into his second over, and now the momentum somewhat seems to be shifting in Gujarat's favour, though they still have a lot of work left if they are to get to a competitive total. Fifty partnership up in the third ball of the over, after Smith cuts a slower ball outside off from Cutting to slice the ball over gully. Cutting responds with a yorker down leg, that Smith barely ables to negotiate and gets only a single off. We can hear him react angrily at failing to guide it down the leg side. Eight off the over, and time for the second timeout.
Preview: Reeling from a 10-wicket mauling by two-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Kolkata Knight Riders, Gujarat Lions have a daunting task when they take on defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in the afternoon match of Sunday's double-header here.
The Lions were demolished by the KKR opening pair of Chris Lynn and Gautam Gambhir during their 184-run opening stand in their opening tie at Rajkot on Friday.
On the other hand, the hosts will be brimming with confidence after a comfortable 35-run win in their opening game against an injury-ravaged Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at home on Wednesday.
With the likes of senior batsmen Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh and all-rounder Moises Henriques in red hot form, David Warner's side looks the favourites going into the match.
In the opening game, Yuvraj and Dhawan made their intent of getting a recall to India's Champions Trophy squad clear with some destructive batting. While Yuvraj blasted a 27-ball 62, Dhawan laid the foundation, scoring 40 runs with Henriques also getting a half century.
Sunrisers have a potent bowling attack with veteran Ashish Nehra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ben Cutting and Afghanistan rookie Rashid Khan sharing the burden.
Gujarat, meanwhile, have a lot to strategise going into the game against the hosts. Australia all-rounder James Faulkner may replace a horribly out-of-form and out-of-shape Dwayne Smith.
With Jason Roy and Brendon McCullum set to get a longer rope at the top of the order, Faulkner's better bowling ability makes him a more viable option that Smith, who is batting lower down the order.
Skipper Suresh Raina had acknowledged missing seasoned players like Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja. Stumper Dinesh Karthik and Raina looked in good touch, but they definitely would make some changes in their bowling department.
Gujarat's primarily Indian bowling line-up, comprising the likes of Shivil Kaushik and medium pacer Dhawal Kulkarni were taken to the cleaners by the KKR opening duo on Friday.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner (Captain), Yuvraj Singh, Tanmay Agarwal, Ricky Bhui, Bipul Sharma, Ben Cutting, Shikhar Dhawan, Eklavya Dwivedi, Moises Henriques, Deepak Hooda, Chris Jordan, Siddarth Kaul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ben Laughlin, Abhimanyu Mithun, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammed Siraj, Mustafizur Rahman, Ashish Nehra, Naman Ojha, Rashid Khan, Vijay Shankar, Barinder Sran, Pravin Tambe, Kane Williamson.
Gujarat Lions: Suresh Raina (Captain), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Jason Roy, Dwayne Smith, Akshdeep Nath, Shubham Agarwal, Basil Thampi, Dwayne Bravo, Chirag Suri, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Manpreet Gony, Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, Shadab Jakati, Shivil Kaushik, Dhawal Kulkarni, Praveen Kumar, Brendon McCullum, Munaf Patel, Pratham Singh, Pradeep Sangwan, Jaydev Shah, Shelley Shaurya, Nathu Singh, Tejas Baroka, Andrew Tye.
