After restricting India to a chaseable total of 170, Pakistan crumbled to the wily left-arm spin of Ekta Bisht, the loop of Deepti Sharma and the aggression of Mansi Joshi. It was an overwhelming victory set up by the bowlers after the batswomen failed to deliver on a tough batting pitch. Despite an excellent show of bowling from Pakistan bowlers, the inexperience, in terms of batting, showed with poor shot selection. This was their best chance to upset India and they let it slip leaving them to wonder: What if?

So, India maintain a clean slate against Pakistan in ODIs and move to the top of the points table.

Pakistan captain, Sana Mir: It was our best bowling performance against India. If our batting had backed up the good bowling performance, we could have had a better game. Diana Baig is a wonderful athlete. As a captain, I’m very proud of her. When you’re playing against a good bowling side, you can’t play cross (batted) shots.

India captain, Mithali Raj: There were anxious moments. But Sushma Verma’s contribution in the end was very crucial. Once we got 170, we thought it could be anybody’s game. It was one of those days when the top order failed and we will address that before the next match . Ekta has always delivered when she has been given the new ball. Her spell was very crucial. Her first spell actually got us back in the game. I believe that when you are defending a small target, one has to come out with proper plans. And if we aim to be the best team in the world, the bowling side should be able to come back and perform the way the girls have done today.

Ekta Bisht is adjudged Player of the Match. Her figures: 10-2-18-5.

Bisht (translated from Hindi): We put up a fighting target. I knew all we had to do was increase pressure through dot balls and wickets would follow. I prefer bowling with the new ball. The pitch was taking turn but my job is to bowl well regardless of the nature of the wicket.

Preview: Their confidence on an all-time high after back-to-back wins, India would look to continue their unbeaten streak when they clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in their third game of the ICC Women’s World Cup. [caption id=“attachment_3767517” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]Raj-Mir 380 File photo of India captain Mithali Raj and Pakistan captain Sana Mir.[/caption] India, enjoying rich vein of form, would definitely start as overwhelming favourites against Pakistan, who looked below-par in the tournament so far. As far as their recent form is concerned, India comprehensively won their last four ODI series, first whitewashing Sri Lanka and the West Indies at home and then beating South Africa in the finals of the World Cup qualifier as well as the quadrangular series. The Indians continued from where they left in the qualifiers and registered comprehensive victories in their first two matches. India made a dream start to the tournament by stunning hosts England by 35 runs before trouncing West Indies by seven wickets in their next encounter. Sana Mir-led Pakistan, on the other hand, are yet to taste victory in the tournament. They have lost by three wickets against South Africa before being handed a heavy 107 runs defeat via D/L method by England. And come tomorrow, they would be desperate to open their account and what better it can be if they can taste success at the expense of traditional rivals India. But it would be easier said than done as India are looking a completely different side in this tournament. The Indians have so far excelled in all three departments of the game. While the batters stole the limelight against England, it was the chance of the bowlers to shine against West Indies as they restricted the Caribbeans to a paltry 183 for eight. Spin trio of Deepti Sharma (2/27), Poonam Yadav (2/19) and Harmanpreet Kaur (2/42) demolished West Indies the other day. She might not have picked up any wickets in the first two games, but Jhulan Goswami, the highest wicket-taker in ODI history, will lead the Indian bowling attack and would be desperate to contribute to the team’s cause. On the batting front, opener Smriti Mandhana looked to be enjoying the form of her life. The left-hander, who has made a fine return from injury, followed up her 90-run knock against England with a smashing 106 off just 108 balls against the West Indies to set up the base for India’s chase. With 196 runs in just two games, the 20-year-old Mandhana has no intention of stopping and she has already warned that there is a lot more to come. “I’m not satisfied at all, I haven’t worked really hard for the last five months to get fit just for a 90 or a hundred. I want to do well for India and win the World Cup for India. That’s what I’ve been craving for in the last five months,” she had said. Besides Mandhana, skipper Mithali Raj too is in tremendous touch. She struck a record-breaking seven successive half centuries before the streak got snapped in the last game against West Indies. Against West Indies (46), Raj fell just four runs short of what could have been her eighth successive half century. But the Indians will have to be on their toes tomorrow as plenty of emotions run in any Indo-Pak encounter and eventually the team which can hold their nerve better will have an edge over their rival. Teams (from): India: Mithali Raj (capt), Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Veda Krishnamurthy, Mona Meshram, Poonam Raut, Deepti Sharma, Jhulan Goswami, Shikha Pandey, Ekta Bisht, Sushma Verma, Mansi Joshi, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Poonam Yadav, Nuzhat Parween. Pakistan: Sana Mir (capt), Asmavia Iqbal, Ayesha Zafar, Diana Baig, Ghulam Fatima, Iram Javed, Javeria Khan, Kainat Imtiaz, Marina Iqbal, Nahida Khan, Nain Abidi, Nashra Sandhu, Sadia Yousuf, Sidra Nawaz, Waheeda Akhtar, Bismah Maroof.
