The USA is through to the quarter-finals. They will next play either England or Japan in Goa. On current form, one can reasonably see the Americans in the last four. Their stunning offensive display has already marked them out as one of the most dangerous teams in this tournament. As for Paraguay, just like its coach Morinigo had feared, the defence fell away. A bad defeat for a team which had played a couple of entertaining matches in the group stage. But on today’s evidence, Paraguay will not be missed.

PEEEEEP PEEEEEEP! USA 5-0 Paraguay

That’s it! The USA have thrashed Paraguay, who had a 100 percent record before the start of the game, to enter the quarter-finals of the tournament. This is arguably the best performance by a team at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium so far. Hackworth’s young guns possess an attacking threat second to none.

The USA await the winner of the England and Japan clash.

The 90 minutes are up and the referee signals for two extra minutes. The USA players are already celebrating. What a win this is for a team who finished at the bottom of the table in the previous edition.

85’ USA 5-0 Paraguay

Andrew Carleton has been the standout player for the USA, orchestrating the midfield and creating tons of chances for the attackers. This is the kind of support that is required against an attacking side like Paraguay.

77’ GOAL USA 5-0 Paraguay

Hackworth’s men are running riot at the moment. Timothy Weah gets his third of the night and that speaks volumes about him and the team. This is complete annihilation by the USA. Paraguay, who started well, were reluctant to move ahead after conceding twice.

74’ GOAL USA 4-0 Paraguay

And that caps it off. We have seen two different kinds of thrashing today. Colombia was no match for Germany. Paraguay, though, fought hard during the first half. However, the South Americans have collapsed now. Josh Sargent hit a powerful shot to beat the Paraguayan ‘keeper. This is getting embarrassing for Morinigo’s boys.

70’ USA 3-0 Paraguay

The credit goes to the USA coach John Hackworth for fielding an attacking side despite knowing that Paraguay like to score on the break.

Fantastic football by the USA. A goal which had the best virtues of precision football. Akil Watts is set free on the right and he finds Josh Sargent near the six-yard box with a pass from the byline. The skipper turns and cuts the ball back to Andrew Carleton, who is ready to power a first-time shot home. That should sound the death knell for Paraguay.

64’ GOAL USA 3-0 Paraguay

Another excellent build-up play and another classy goal. Andrew Carleton scores his second goal of the tournament to put the USA in the driver’s seat against Paraguay. Sargent with the all-important assist

This was probably the best strike in all of Delhi’s eight matches. Tim Weah received the ball on the left flank and approached the goal, followed closely by Paraguay’s Jesus Rolon. However, the defender could not block Weah’s path and the latter cut in to unleash a ferocious shot from his right boot. The ball travelled 20 yards, shellacking the net. The goalie had no chance. Stunning strike and the US will feel confident about reaching the quarters now.

60’ USA 2-0 Paraguay

The momentum has shifted in the USA’s favour after Weah’s wonder strike. Akinola has combined well with Josh Sargent and it looks like they won’t stop creating chances.

WHAT. A. GOAL! Tim Weah is at it again and this time with a screamer to extend USA’s lead against Paraguay. This goal could easily end up becoming the goal of the tournament

Chris Gloster replaces Ajax’s Sergino Dest at left back for the United States. Gloster is arguably the better player going forward, so it will be worth keeping an eye on him.

HALF-TIME! USA 1-0 Paraguay

Paraguay build a steady phase of pressure with Alan Rodriguez coming the closest to scoring when his toe poke narrowly misses the crossbar. The US survive and respond with a chance of their own just before the clock strikes 45. Chris Goslin, from a freekick 30 yards out, hits a venomous dipping shot which beats everyone but the woodwork. That would have been harsh on Paraguay, which has at least given itself a fighting chance in this match. Akinola could also have doubled the US’ lead in added time but a goal-line clearance by Marcelo Rolon saves the Paraguayans. It’s 1-0 to the US at the interval.

CHANCE! The USA come close again! Akinola’s push has been cleared off the line. That could’ve been the end of the road for Paraguay.

40’ USA 1-0 Paraguay

The Paraguayans are playing some excellent attacking football to unsettle the Americans. Baez and Romero are finding it difficult to finish in the final third. The momentum is in the favour of Gustavo Morinigo’s men so far.

35’ USA 1-0 Paraguay

Tactical change for Paraguay as Fernando Romero replaces Antonio Galeano. Romero is one of the centre-forwards now with Fernando Cardozo moving to the right flank. Romero nearly had a great chance as soon as he came on but he is dispossessed by Sergino Dest. The US is still in control and they have made a change of their own. Blaine Ferri, who had taken a knock earlier, goes off for Indiana Vassilev.

It is the US which hits Paraguay with a fast breakaway. The ball dropped nicely for Carleton on the halfway line who put Akinola through with a fastball. The forward ran on to deliver a well-timed ball from the right for Tim Weah, who cushioned it home. Weah finally breaks his duck in the World Cup!

GOAL! 18’ USA 1-0 Paraguay

Brilliant one-touch football and Tim Weah nets his first goal of the tournament. Despite enjoying ball possession, Paraguay were caught in a little bit of a mix-up at the back and USA took advantage of that to draw first blood.

15’ USA 0-0 Paraguay

The USA have enjoyed the bulk of possession in the opening quarter without making much headway. Both sides seem to be feeling their way into the match. Paraguay is happy to sit back and hit the Americans on the counter. That could turn out to be a reliable plan as the US is likely to dominate the proceedings here.

There’s nothing to separate the two teams so far. Neither side has created more than one chance. However, Paraguay look organised in the early stages of the game.

The USA is lined up in its usual 4-2-3-1 formation. The Paraguayans, despite the Americans’ obvious attacking potential, have fielded a conventional 4-4-2 setup.

Six changes for Paraguay as coach Gustavo Morinigo goes back to his preferred starting eleven. There are four alterations to the United States lineup as well, with first-choice full backs Jaylin Lindsey (absent) and Chris Gloster missing out. There’s the return of a couple of key names, though, in Blaine Ferri and Tim Weah.

Hello and welcome to Firstpost liveblog of USA versus Paraguay. The Americans will be under massive pressure as they are coming from a 1-3 defeat at the hands of yet another South American side Colombia. Paraguay, on the other hand, have been clinical so far, maintaining a 100 percent record

Preview: The United States will look to a strong comeback after a blip against Colombia when they face Paraguay in a Round-of-16 clash on Monday. The US defeated India and Ghana, before losing to Colombia 1-3 in Group A to qualify in the knock-out stage. [caption id=“attachment_4148857” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![USA's Josh Sargent of the celebrates along with teammates. Getty Images[/caption] The previous match could also be a case of being content knowing that you have qualified for the next round. Hence, the US will hope to return to winning ways as they return to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium after the loss in Mumbai. “This team is capable of producing a strong performance and bouncing back. The players are in good shape and ready, but we need to be at our best on the pitch,” US coach John Hackworth said ahead of the game. The US have a very good forwards in captain Josh Sargent, Tim Weah, Chris Goslin and Ayo Akinola. They also have a very stable defence, marshalled by Sergino Dest and Chris Durkin, which stood tall against the all-attacking Ghana side. On the other hand, Paraguay kept a hundred per cent record in the group stages defeating Mali, New Zealand and Turkey in Group C. According to official stats, Paraguay, along with Iran, finished the group phase with 10 goals (3.33 per game). The fact that these were shared among seven players, including some substitutes, meant that the South Americans have plenty of attacking options. The US need to control attacking midfielder Alan Rodriguez (two goals), who has already proved that he is a special talent. Paraguay coach Gustavo Morinigo, however, knows the task his side awaits: “The US is really a complicated team, the individuals, the captain himself, it has one of the best players and the team is really good,” Morinigo told reporters during the pre-match press conference.
