Google Doodle focuses on speed skating on day twelve of the 2018 Winter Olympics

Moving on to day 12 of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Google doodle today turns its focus to speed skating. Celebrating the 13th day of its Doodle Snow Games series, Google takes us through to the ice rink ahead of time today, as Millipede gears up to take gold at the event.

Today's Doodle is a short one, where we start off by seeing two long columns of skiies, towards the end of which we find Millipede. The arthropod is seen putting on his first ski and is delighted to do so. We can only imagine how long it will take him to be all set and ready to start.

As per Google's blog post, Millipede is the defending champion and is certainly no pushover after having won the title by a thousandth of a second. Cousin, Centi (centipede) will be close on his heels to try and snatch victory.

For those who are not too familiar with the sport, speed skating involves two athletes wearing skates that start simultaneously and compete speeding on a 400 m ice track. The 400 m course distinguishes the "in" course from "out" course. A team of two skaters are supposed to change lanes in a specified section in every circle, with the skater that started in the "out" course coming to the "in" course and vice versa. This year's Winter Olympics will host a total of 12 events for men and women in speed skating.

The Google Doodle series celebrated ski jumping on day 12 and the skeleton competition on day 11.

Google is expected to showcase 17 doodles in total as part of Google Snow Games. Today's doodle is spread across major parts of North America, a few countries in South America, all of Europe and Australia, major chunks of Africa and also parts of East and South-East Asia.
