From Virat Kohli's 3000 runs to 5 straight toss wins: Statistical highlights of India vs West Indies Day 1

Antigua: Statistical highlights on the first day’s play of the first Test match between India and the West Indies at Antigua. # Virat Kohli has become the first Indian and the eight visiting captain to register a hundred in the Caribbean in Tests. Australia’s Ricky Ponting was the last captain to accomplish the feat — 158 at Kingston in 2007-08. # Kohli’s magnificent unbeaten 143 is his highest score in first match innings - his only other hundred in first match innings was 119 vs South Africa at Johannesburg in December 2013. The knock is his first century vs West Indies in 10 innings - his 12th in 73 innings. # Kohli became the 19th Indian batsman to amass 3000 runs or more in Tests and also completed his 1,000 runs as Test captain in 18 innings - his aggregate being 1039 (ave.61.11), including five hundreds and two fifties. AP[/caption] # Kohli’s distinction of reaching 1000 runs in 18 innings is the joint-second quickest by an Indian captain along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Sunil Gavaskar took 14 innings for his 1000. # With five centuries overseas as captain, Kohli has equalled Mohammad Azharuddin’s tally, sharing an Indian record for most centuries (five) away from home. # In seven Tests away from home as skipper, Kohli is averaging 76.27 while aggregating 839 runs in 12 innings, including five hundreds and a fifty. His superb average as captain away from home is the second highest next only to Don Bradman’s 85.63 in nine Tests (942 runs in 15 innings, including five hundreds and two fifties). # Kohli became the third Indian captain to register a century in Tests in the Caribbean, joining Rahul Dravid (146 at Gros Islet in June 2006) and Kapil Dev (100 not out at Port of Spain in March 1983). Kapil Dev had missed another century as captain - 98 off 97 balls at St.John’s in 1983. # Kohli became the first Indian skipper to register a fifty or more in his maiden innings in the Caribbean, outstripping Rahul Dravid’s 49 at St.John’s in 2006. # Kohli’s unbeaten knock is the highest by a captain in Tests at North Sound, eclipsing West Indian, Ramnaresh Sarwan’s 128 vs Australia in 2008. Sarwan and Kohli are the only two captains to register hundreds at this venue. # India’s impressive 302 for four is their first total of 300 or more on the first day of a Test series in the Caribbean, obliterating the 246 at Kingston in 2011. # Shikhar Dhawan has registered his highest score vs West Indies in Tests, eclipsing the 33 off 28 balls in the 2013-14 Mumbai Test. Since recording consecutive hundreds (173 vs Bangladesh and 134 vs Sri Lanka) last year, the said knock is his first fifty in nine innings. # Dhawan became the fifth Indian opening batsman to record a fifty in the maiden Test innings in the Caribbean, joining Madhav Apte, Sunil Gavaskar, VVS Laxman and Ajay Jadeja. # Dhawan’s knock of 84 is the second highest by an Indian left-handed batsman in the Caribbean behind the 104 by Salim Durani at Port of Spain in April 1962. # Only four Indian batsmen have amassed more runs in their maiden Test innings vs West Indies in the Caribbean - Polly Umrigar - 130 at Port of Spain in 1952-53, Brijesh Patel - 115 not out at Port of Spain in 1975-76, Sanjay Manjrekar - 108 at Bridgetown in 1988-89 and Ajay Jadeja - 96 at St.John’s in 1996-97. # Kohli and Dhawan were involved in a stand of 105 for the third wicket - the first century partnership for this wicket at this venue, obliterating the 90 between Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor for New Zealand vs West Indies in July 2012. # As a pair, Kohli and Dhawan are averaging 110.80 for the third wicket - their tally being 554 in five innings. The said average dismissal per innings is the third highest by a pair for the third wicket, with a minimum of five partnerships, behind 137.00 between Wally Hammond and Eddie Paynter and 145.25 between Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar. # Kohli has won five successive tosses between November 2015 and July 2016 in Tests. Nari Contractor (6), Mohammad Azharuddin (6) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (6) - three Indian skippers share a record for winning most consecutive tosses. In his previous series as skipper vs South Africa in 2015-16, Kohli had won all four tosses.
