French Open 2014: Why Eugenie Bouchard deserves to beat Maria Sharapova

Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard is the only player to make both the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year. She also won her first first WTA title just weeks ago, in Germany. But that isn’t the only reason why she should get the better of Maria Sharapova when they clash in the French Open semi-finals. She has wonderful groundstrokes, is just 20 years old and the star that women’s tennis desperately needs. Sharapova has been around for a while and it’s always nice to see her do well but her shoulder injury pushed her off-track for a while and her game still hasn’t got back to its former glory. Bouchard, on the other hand, is on the way up and a win against Sharapova could push her to the next level. [caption id=“attachment_1555831” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Bouchard is a star. AP](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/France-Tennis-French-_Verm-1.jpg) Bouchard is a star. She just is. AP[/caption] She is also very focussed, after her win in the pre-quarters, Bouchard said: “Best friend on tour, I don’t have one. I don’t think the tennis tour is the place to have friends. For me, it’s all competition. And I think it’s important to just remember that we’re going to play against each other. It’s not like we’re teammates. To me, it’s kind of more competitive.” So she isn’t just a beauty. She’s got some steel as well and it shows in her game. Yesterday, in her quarter-final against Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro – she was trailing 4-1 in the third, having lost 10 of the last 13 games. But she hung in there and found a way to win. She keeps going for her shots and that is what helped her overcome the Spaniard. Of course, she also happens to perhaps be the most fun Twitter personality on the women’s circuit. If nothing else, that gives her more than a few brownie points. She says oui. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/status/473216661034893313 She eats. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/statuses/464088117268344832 She likes Anna Kournikova. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/statuses/407681273550090241 Here selfies are awesome. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/status/473928412701417473 https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/statuses/466580188638498816 She is in Vogue. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/status/469896198401171457 You can also call her Marie. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/status/468457424169336836 And she has a twin. https://twitter.com/geniebouchard/statuses/438385039894921216
