Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus Day 6 Preview: Having already been eliminated from the race to final, Gukesh Dommaraju will be aiming to keep himself in contention for the fifth place at the very least when he faces Hikaru Nakamura in Game 2 of their classification match on Wednesday. Gukesh and Nakamura had played out a 59-move stalemate on Tuesday, the longest game on the fifth day of the event that is taking place at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort in northern Germany.
The winner of the Gukesh vs Nakamura battle will then face the winner of the other classification match between Alireza Firouzja and Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Firouzja, who had topped the standings at the end of the Round Robin stage of the tournament only to lose his quarter-final meeting with Vincent Keymer, had also played out a draw against Uzbekistani GM Nodirbek.
Wednesday will also witness Game 2 of the semi-final fixtures between Keymer and Magnus Carlsen on one hand and Javokhir Sindarov and Fabiano Caruana on the other. While Caruana, who had defeated Gukesh in 40 and 18 moves respectively in the quarter-finals, held Sindarov to a draw, Keymer registered an upset by forcing Carlsen to resign in just 39 moves, threatening to end the world No 1’s campaign.
