Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025 Weissenhaus Day 8 LIVE: Gukesh Dommaraju will get one last shot at signing off from the opening event of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour with a victory when he faces Alireza Firouzja in Game 2 of their seventh-place playoff game on Friday. World champion Gukesh has failed to collect a single victory across seven days of competition so far at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort, drawing 11 games and losing five, and will finish eighth if he isn’t able to beat Firouzja either in the second Classical game or in the subsequent tie-breaks.
In other games on Day 8, local favourite Vincent Keymer will be facing Fabiano Caruana in Game 2 of the final, hoping to seal an emphatic triumph after going 1-0 up on Thursday with a win in 33 moves.
Keymer had pulled off a stunning victory over world No 1 Magnus Carlsen in the semi-finals, defeating the Freestyle Chess co-founder in 39 moves in Game 1, and will be hoping to seal the deal with a draw at the very least on the final day of the competition.
Carlsen and world No 2 Hikaru Nakamura too will be aiming to clinch their respective matches – for the third and fifth places respectively – without allowing it to go into tie-breaks after winning Game 1 on Thursday. The two top-ranked players in the world are facing Uzbekistani Grandmasters – Carlsen against Javokhir Sindarov and Nakamura against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
Vladimir Fedoseev and Levon Aronian had failed to progress to the knockouts earlier in the Weissenhaus tournament after finishing ninth and 10th respectively at the end of he round-robin stage. Aronian would later beat Fedoseev 1.5-0.5 to finish at the ninth spot.
