Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Weissenhaus Day 7 Preview: Gukesh Dommaraju will have one last shot at signing off from the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour event in Weissenhaus on a winning note when he faces Alireza Firouzja in the seventh-place playoff starting Thursday. Gukesh has had a massively underwhelming campaign so far at the Weissenhaus Private Nature Luxury Resort – located on the Baltic coast in northern Germany.
The reigning world champion is yet to win a match after six days of competition, having collected 10 draws and five defeats along the way. After finishing eighth in the 10-player standings at the end of the Round-Robin stage, Gukesh lost both quarter-final games against Fabiano Caruana – who is set to face Vincent Keymer for the Weissenhaus title starting Thursday. Gukesh resigned in 40 moves in Game 1 while the second game was even shorter, in which the 18-year-old raised the white flag in just 18 moves.
Gukesh would then play out back-to-back draws in his 5th-8th classification match against world No 2 Hikaru Nakamura. The match then went into rapid tie-breaks, in which the two chess stars shook hands after a staggering 103 moves in Game 1. Nakamura, however, capitalised on a series of errors from Gukesh to win the second rapid game and setup a fifth-place playoff against Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
