Freestyle Chess Grand Slam LIVE Score: It’s do-or-die for world chess champion D Gukesh as he takes on Fabiano Caruana in the second game of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour quarter-finals at Weissenhaus on Monday (10 February). The quarter-finals in the Weissenhaus leg of the inaugural Freestyle Chess Grand Slam is being played over two games. Gukesh lost the first game in 40 moves to the American Grandmaster while playing with the white pieces.
Gukesh, who became the world champion by being Ding Liren last year, will look to level the score with a win in the second quarter-finals against Caruana. The 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster will be playing with black pieces and a defeat will see him get eliminated from the Weissenhaus leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour.
Gukesh has been in poor form in the ongoing Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Stage 1, having qualified for the quarter-finals despite not winning a single match in the round-robin stage. Gukesh played out seven draws and suffered two losses in the round-robin stage and qualified by finishing eighth and grabbing that last qualifying spot among the 10 participants.
In the remaining quarter-finals on Sunday, Freestyle Chess Grand Slam co-owner Magnus Carlsen defeated Nodirbek Abdusattarov, while Vincent Keymer beat Alireza Firouzja. Hikaru Nakamura’s match against Javokhir Sindarov ended in a draw.
To make things interesting, the participants in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam are only informed about the opening position 15 minutes before the match, leading to innovative e openings and multiple errors. Carlsen hopes the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour will help chess become a more popular sport.
