Mumbai City FC clinched a 2-1 victory over the Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) to end their unbeaten run in the Indian Super League (ISL) in a feisty clash at the Mumbai Football Arena on Wednesday. The contest will go down in ISL history for seven red cards being brandished by the referee with 11 yellow cards also being shown. The heated game saw four red cards being shown during the regulation 90 minutes - two each for both teams - and a further three sending offs following a melee at the end of the encounter. The first sending off came in as early as the 13th minute when Akash Mishra was shown the red card for a high boot as his knee clattered into the back of Manvir Singh.
Asish Rai and Liston Colaco were sent off in the second half in the space of three minutes (54’ and 57’). Rai earned a red card for a rash sliding tackle, while Colaco’s dissent earned him a straight red. Mumbai City FC were reduced to nine men as well when Greg Stewart was booked a second time for a dive inside the Mohun Bagan SG penalty area. Replays, however, suggested Anirudh Thapa had made contact with Stewart in the box. A fracas after the final whitsle saw Rahul Bheke and Hector Yuste also earning red cards with Vikram Partap Singh being booked. During the game, though, Greg Stewart and Bipin Singh completed the comeback for Mumbai City FC after Jason Cummings had opened the scoring for Mohun Bagan. It was third-placed Mohun Bagan’s first loss of the ISL season, with Mumbai City FC drawing level with them on 19 points, although they’ve played a game more.
