Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr has refused to renew his contract with the Los Blancos and reports have already started linking the Brazilian superstar with clubs in the Premier League.
According to a report in The Athletic, Vinicius has informed the president of the club that he is not willing to renew his contract at the club. He joined Real Madrid in 2018 from Brazil’s Flamengo and has been a part of three La Liga and two Champions League-winning sides.
The 25-year-old’s contract is set to expire in June 2027 and Real Madrid might have to look beyond him in their forward line after that.
Why Vinicius refused to renew contract with Real Madrid?
According the report in The Athletic, the Brazilian was offered a contract that would increase his salary to around €20million from his current €18million. However, Vinicius refused the contract and instead demanded a contract that would be around the level which was given to Cristiano Ronaldo.
He demanded €30million per season including performance bonuses and a renewal bonus which is not the norm at the club.
However, finances are a small part of the problem. The bigger issue is Vinicius’s deteriorating relationship with the manager Xabi Alonso.
Vinicius lost the 2024 Ballon d’Or only to Rodri and he was among the biggest stars in Europe around that time. But since Alonso has taken over, the Brazilian has been not used as much.
He has started from bench four times since Madrid’s Club World Cup semifinal loss to PSG and has completed only five of the 17 games played by his side across all competitions.
Vinicius’s displeasure with his treatment came out in open after his El Classico substitution. While walking out, he was seen saying: “Always me, I’m leaving the team, it’s better if I leave.”
Even though he apologised for his comments later, his relationship with Alonso has not reportedly improved. And that could pave way for his exit from the Spanish capital with English media already linking him to Premier League clubs.
