The new season of the UEFA Champions League got underway earlier this week with Europe’s top club football tournament debuting a new format, one that ensures teams play more matches before the knockouts.
The old format of the Champions League had teams playing six fixtures in the group stage, playing each team in their group on a home-and-away basis. The new format will have teams play two fixtures more than they did before the Round of 16 under the previous format, and against eight different opponents instead of three.
Two-time winners Juventus won the opening fixture of the 2024-25 season on Tuesday, defeating PSV Eindhoven 3-1, which was followed by Aston Villa beating Young Boys 3-0.
Wednesday featured as many as six matches, with defending champions Real Madrid opening their account with a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart and six-time champions Liverpool defeating seven-time winners AC Milan by a similar margin.
Wednesday’s fixtures also witnessed Bayern Munich demolish Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 , with English striker Harry Kane scoring four of those goals and completing a hat-trick of penalties. Additionally, Premier League champions Manchester City began their campaign with a goalless draw against Italian champions Inter Milan.
