Senegal vs Morocco, AFCON Final LIVE: Hosts Morocco face Senegal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Sunday, 18 January, with the two teams setting their sights on joining an elite list of teams with multiple AFCON titles. Morocco, the team that had become the first African team to reach the FIFA World Cup semi-finals in Qatar a little over three years ago, had beaten Nigeria 4-2 on penalties in the semi-finals after both teams finished goalless.
Senegal, meanwhile, beat Egypt – the most successful team in the history of the competition with seven titles, 1-0 in the other semi-final thanks to Sadio Mane’s strike.
Morocco had won their only AFCON title in 1976 while the Senegal had triumphed more recently, in 2021. The Senegalese had additionally finished runners-up in 2002 and 2019 while the only other appearance for the Moroccans in the final was in 2004, when they suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Tunisia.
Morocco well ahead of Senegal on H2H record
Morocco, meanwhile, enter the AFCON final as the favourites, if their head-to-head record against Senegal is to be taken into account. Sunday’s final, after all, will be the 32nd meeting between these two teams with the Atlas Lions having triumphed in more than half of those games – 18 to be more precise. The ‘Lions of Teranga’, meanwhile, have beaten Morocco just six times with seven matches between these two sides ending in a stalemate.
Sunday’s final marks the conclusion of a four-week football extravaganza in Morocco, with the home team having beaten Comoros 2-0 in the opening game on 21 December at the venue that also hosts the final.
The northern African nation will be co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal and hopes it has established its credentials as a deserving host with this tournament.
