The football world was left devastated on Thursday following the tragic passing of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international died in a car crash in Spain. Jota, 28, was travelling with his brother Andre, 26, also a footballer when the vehicle went off-road. According to Spanish Police, the incident occurred on the A-52 highway in the province of Zamora, where both men were found dead.

As Jota was a routine feature in both Liverpool and Portugal lineups, there is a sense of shared grief among the football community who have witnessed him week in and week out. Moreover, what comes as further hard-hitting is the fact that he got married just 10 days ago. The social media space is filled with fans mourning the death of the player. Besides the fans, his teammate, the players who shared the field with him, as well as different franchises have paid their respect towards the demised.

Jota appeared in 182 matches for Liverpool across all competitions, scoring 65 goals and registering 22 assists. He was an integral part of the record-setting Liverpool team that conquered the Premier League 2024-25 trophy. Jota also made 49 appearances for Portugal, twice winning the UEFA Nations League.
