El Clasico in Spanish Super Cup Final: Real Madrid set up Barcelona clash for title with win over Atletico

The El Clasico will decide the Spanish Super Cup for the fourth straight year as Real Madrid set up their clash with Barcelona with a win over Atletico Madrid on Thursday night in Jeddah in the semifinal. The two city rivals took on each other with an aim to get closer to the trophy and after an exciting period of 90 minutes, it was Real Madrid who turned out triumphant.

Federico Valverde struck just a minute after the opening whistle to push Real Madrid, who were without the injured Kylian Mbappe, ahead. Rodrygo then doubled Real’s lead in the 55th minute but Alexander Sorloth helped Atletico cut the deficit in half just a few minutes later. Atletico pushed relentlessly to find the equaliser which never came and Real advanced to the final.

Atletico dominated on most metrics but were left behind on goal count and fans will witness another Classico in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Diego Simeone-Vinicius Jr tensions

While the game was already tense, the temperature rose further when Atletico manager Diego Simeone got involved in a verbal spat with Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. The incident happened when Vinicius was substituted late in the game. Simeone reportedly told the Brazilian that he will be “kicked out” by president Florentino Perez.

Real manager Xabi Alonso was not impressed by Simeone’s behaviour and said that it was unacceptable

You have to respect your opponent, and everything that happens on the field has its limits,” he said after the match.
