The Premier League Summer Series, launched only in 2023, is already facing stiff resistance from several top-division clubs, who want the competition scrapped due to its lack of financial feasibility. The Premier League Summer Series is a pre-season friendly football tournament among Premier League clubs, which is hosted in the United States.
The Premier League Summer Series 2025 will be running from 26 July to 3 August. It is the second edition of the tournament after Chelsea won the inaugural event in 2023. The ongoing 2025 tournament includes top clubs like Manchester United, Everton, West Ham United and Bournemouth.
EPL Summer Series faces questions over financial feasibility
The competition is seen as a marketing attempt by the Premier League to expand its global footprint. It is only the second Premier League-affiliated tournament to be hosted outside England after the Premier League Asia Trophy.
However, the idea of a football competition run by the Premier League in the USA is facing resistance from a few clubs, who feel the central funds should not be used to host a promotional event, especially when not all 20 clubs are part of it.
The concerns of the clubs, which are not a part of the Premier League Summer Series 2025, have risen since the disclosure that the 2023 edition of the tournament registered a mind-boggling loss of £5.4million. It has been reported that the 2025 tournament will also incur losses, but considerably less than the first edition.
“They’re expecting those not involved to prop it up to the tune of £250,000,” a source told Mail Sport. “That shouldn’t be happening.”
As per the report in Mail Sport, the Premier League is using the central commercial partners to sponsor the tournament as it is struggling to get a title sponsor in place for the Summer Series. Another reason central funds are used is that the host venues are not required to pay for the matches.
Despite resistance, a majority of Premier League teams are reportedly in favour of the Summer Series as they feel it will help the competition gain a much larger fan base and eventually lead to higher global income. A latest estimate predicts that the Summer Series can help the Premier League make £4 billion in revenue a year in the future.
The Premier League Summer Series 2025 started on Saturday at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as Bournemouth defeated Everton 3-0 and Manchester United thrashed West Ham 2-1.
On Wednesday, West Ham beat Everton 2-1, while United defeated Bournemouth 4-1 at Soldier Field stadium in Chicago.
