London police have launched an investigation after a Premier League footballer was allegedly threatened with a gun on a busy street earlier this year. The incident reportedly happened around 11:14 pm (local time) on September 6, when the player was walking with a friend.
Gun threat and blackmail claims
According to reports in The Sun, a high-profile football agent was arrested soon after the incident. The agent is accused of pointing the firearm and trying to cause fear of violence. He is also being investigated for blackmail and making threats towards the footballer’s friend.
London police reportedly raided the agent’s home two days after the alleged incident. Although he has not been charged yet, the agent was taken into custody and later released on bail on September 9. One of his bail conditions prevents him from contacting the player involved.
He has also been banned from visiting the player’s club training ground or travelling abroad without police permission. However, a judge later allowed changes to his bail conditions so he could make pre-planned trips outside the UK. The agent must hand over his passport to the police once he returns.
“This was a terrifying incident and one which has sent shockwaves through the business side of football. The player was understandably shaken up — to have threats made against you with a gun is shocking. He reported it right away. It was the right thing to do for his safety,” The Sun quoted a source as saying.
“He has been supported by his friends and club and they all hope it will not impact his performances. But there will be serious questions about why this happened, which the police are now trying to answer,” the source cited by the British newspaper added.
The football player is reportedly in his 20s and is valued at £60 million. The newspaper didn’t reveal his name due to legal reasons. Further information will come out after the investigation is completed.
