The Premier League returned with its first full Saturday of the 2025-26 season, and it gave fans plenty of drama and excitement. While Sunderland made a dream comeback to the English top-tier league, Manchester City put on a ruthless display to go to the top of the points table. Let’s take a look at the top moments from Saturday’s matches.
Sunderland make a brilliant comeback
Sunderland, playing their first Premier League game in eight years, beat West Ham United 3-0 at the Stadium of Light. Eliezer Mayenda opened the scoring in the 61st minute with a fine header before play-off hero Dan Ballard doubled the lead. After that, substitute Wilson Isidor wrapped it up in stoppage time to win in style.
Tottenham off to a flying start
Thomas Frank, who recently replaced Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur, started things off on a positive note as they registered a comfortable 3-0 win over Burnley. Richarlison struck twice, first in the 10th minute from a Mohammed Kudus cross, and then in the 60th minute from another Kudus delivery. Brennan Johnson scored the third and final goal six minutes later.
Meanwhile, Richarlison’s second goal caught everyone’s attention as he scored a bicycle kick, similar to the one he had scored against Serbia in Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Manchester City crush Wolves
Manchester City began their Premier League season in style with a 4-0 away win against Wolves. Summer signing Tijjani Reijnders scored on his debut, while fellow newcomer Rayan Cherki added another goal. Erling Haaland showed his class with two goals of his own as City climbed to the top of the table thanks to superior goal difference.
