Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s AFC Champions League 2 (ACL 2) campaign has hit a roadblock as the club remains uncertain about travelling to Iran for their upcoming group-stage match against Sepahan SC on September 30. The Kolkata-based side was scheduled to fly out on September 27, but the trip is still not confirmed.

The big question on everyone’s mind is whether Mohun Bagan will risk sanctions from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) if they refuse to travel to Iran. The Indian football giants have already written to the AFC, requesting either a postponement of the match or a shift to a neutral venue.

Why is Mohun Bagan hesitant?

Some Mohun Bagan players have reportedly voiced concerns about travelling to Iran due to the tense situation in the region. According to reports, 35 players from the club have signed a letter that Mohun Bagan sent to the AFC, highlighting their concerns over safety and security.

Bagan officials have argued that while the AFC has said Iran is safe to host matches, they have not provided enough clarity on what basis that assurance was given.

What is the AFC’s position?

The AFC has reportedly rejected Mohun Bagan’s request for a neutral venue and has insisted that Iran is safe to host matches. The continental body has also promised security arrangements, not just for Mohun Bagan but also for other visiting teams like Qatar’s Al Wahda and Bahrain’s Al Muharraq, who are also scheduled to play in Iran in the coming days.

What happens if Mohun Bagan skip the match?

If Mohun Bagan do not travel, they could face action from the AFC. These may include suspension from the competition. It could also jeopardise the future participation of Indian clubs in AFC events.

However, this is not the first time Mohun Bagan has raised concerns about travelling to Iran . The club had refused to travel to Iran for a match against Tractor FC last season. The AFC did not impose fines on that occasion but cancelled their remaining group matches.

Where does the situation stand now?

Mohun Bagan has resumed training in Kolkata for the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season, but clarity on their Iran trip is still awaited. The AFC is yet to comment on the latest development.

Meanwhile, Sepahan manager has said that visas have been issued to every Mohun Bagan player and there is no issue from Iran’s side. “Visas have been issued to every Mohun Bagan squad member, including their foreign players. There is no issue from our side,” he said.
