Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has hit out at UEFA for its short message on the death of former Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid, who was killed in Gaza. Salah said the European football body failed to mention how and why Al-Obeid died.

Al-Obeid, once part of the Palestinian national team, was killed in what the Palestine Football Association (PFA) has said was an Israeli air strike on civilians waiting for humanitarian aid in southern Gaza. He was 41 years old and had scored more than 100 goals in his career.

“Former national team player and star of the Khadamat al-Shati team, Suleiman Al-Obeid, was martyred after the [Israeli] occupation forces targeted those waiting for humanitarian aid in the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday,” PFA said in a statement as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Salah slams UEFA

UEFA’s post on X called Al-Obeid the “Palestinian Pele” and praised his talent. However, Salah was not satisfied with the post and replied: “Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?” His comment went viral, getting nearly a million likes in just a few hours.

This is not the first time Salah has spoken about the ongoing violence in Palestine. He has spoken about the war in Gaza before and how it is impacting tens of thousands of families, who have lost their loved ones since the latest round of violence began in October 2023.

“With the brutal war going on in the Middle East, especially the death and destruction in Gaza, this year we get to Christmas with very heavy hearts and we share the pain of those families who are grieving the loss of their loved ones. Please do not forget them and do not get used to their suffering. Merry Christmas,” Salah had said during Christmas in 2023.

According to the United Nations, more than 1,300 people have been killed while trying to get food in Gaza since late May, with over 800 deaths happening near aid sites run by a new Israel and US-backed group called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. They have been accused of “violating the principles of neutrality and independence,” as per The Guardian.
