Michael Carrick named Manchester United head coach till end of season: 'I know what it takes to succeed here'

Manchester United on Wednesday announced Michael Carrick as their new head coach for the remainder of the season. The decision comes days after the club sacked their manager Ruben Amorim, following a series of poor results.

Carrick will not be working alone. He will be assisted by Steve Holland, who was previously England’s assistant coach, while Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion will also be part of the backroom staff.

“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour. I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing,” Carrick said.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here. There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves,” he added.

Carrick’s career before joining United

Carrick enjoyed a successful career at Manchester United as a player. He made 464 appearances for the club and was part of one of its most successful eras. During his time at Old Trafford, he won five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, the Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After retiring from playing in 2018, Carrick moved straight into coaching. He joined the first-team staff and worked under managers such as Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. When Solskjaer left the club, Carrick stepped in as caretaker manager for some time.

Carrick was also the head coach of Middlesbrough, a position he held for around two-and-a-half years after taking charge in October 2022.
