Manchester United ’s hierarchy is reportedly prepared to part ways with manager Ruben Amorim if the club fails to show significant improvement next season. Concerns are mounting over the team’s continued struggles in the ongoing season, where they have slipped to the 13th spot on the points table with just 10 wins in 30 games.
Mounting pressure on Amorim at Old Trafford
According to a report by The Athletic, the club will not tolerate another season filled with defeats, despite there being a sense of long-term planning behind Amorim’s appointment. United’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Wednesday marked their 11th defeat in 29 matches since the 40-year-old Portuguese coach replaced Erik ten Hag in November.
Ruben Amorim took over amid chaos at Old Trafford, leaving behind a dominant Sporting CP side. The Portuguese tactician has struggled to implement his trademark 3-4-3 system. While there’s widespread recognition that Amorim needs time to rebuild the team, he may be running out of time.
The club’s new-look leadership is reportedly unwilling to accept anything close to United’s current position in the league at this stage next season. As per the report, people close to the club have suggested that failure to move up the table and string together consistent performances could bring an end to Amorim’s time at United.
Amorim’s perspective
“I understand and I am not naive. I don’t want to think we need a lot of years to be competitive. I cannot think like that. I know that we are not going to be the biggest contender in the next year or two years," Amorim said.
“We are doing a lot of things. Sometimes, we changed players because they have had to learn how to adjust to our new standards. We have changed a lot of staff, we have changed things inside the club," he added.
“I know that is going to take time. I will not say we need a lot of years. Next year is our goal. I am not saying we are going to win the title in the next year, I am not crazy. We are in a rush, we are suffering a lot to be better next year," Amorim said.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Amorim is expected to be backed by the team management to buy players of his choice. However, that support would require him to bring improvements, and quickly.
