Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that he has not been “good enough” as the coach of the iconic football club amid heightened criticism from players like Paul Scholes, who recently claimed that the Portuguese tactician is not “the right man” for the club. In his first full season as Man United manager, Amorim has only won seven out of 15 English Premier League matches.
Man United are currently eighth in the EPL table with 25 points and four defeats and travel to AFC Bournemouth on Monday. A victory would bring them back into the top six for a second successive week, which would be the first such achievement for the club since the 2023-24 season.
It’s a massive fall from the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, where the club never finished below third since his first Premier League title win in 1993. Recently, legendary midfielder Scholes criticised Amorim for being a misfit at Man United. Scholes wasn’t happy with United’s playing style under Amorim, as he recalled the old attacking style based on wingers.
‘Manchester United are underachieving’: Amorim
Amorim was asked about the criticism on Sunday. The 40-year-old said that he has no issues with it as his team is “underachieving” at the moment.
“I think it’s normal,” Amorim said. “It’s a fact that me as a manager of Manchester United, I think we are underachieving. We should have more points, especially this season. So, I take that naturally.
“Sometimes they don’t have all the information and see Manchester United with the standards they lived here, always winning. It’s hard for them to see their club in this situation.”
Asked if the criticism makes his job tough, Amorim said, “No. Not winning is the issue. The problem is that me as a manager, I’m not doing good enough. That is a fact also and I can accept that. The only problem for them is that Manchester United is not winning and is not in the position that it’s supposed to be. If you are winning, there is no issue.”
While it’s true that Amorim has not been able to deliver as per the high expectations at the club, his measured and respectful responses to the criticism from the legends, who made Man United a legendary club, show his heart is in the right place.
