Manchester United are once again in the headlines as questions arise over Ruben Amorim’s future at Old Trafford. The Portuguese coach has struggled to find consistency this season as well, registering a poor start to the 2025-26 season. He has managed to win just 18 games in 49 matches since taking over the job at United, which is struggling in 14th place in the Premier League table.

United’s scratchy show this season has fueled speculation about a possible sacking of Ruben Amorim . Some reports have suggested that former England manager Gareth Southgate could be a target if United decide to make a switch. Southgate, who failed to win the UEFA Euro final twice before leaving his role, was also linked to the club in the past during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Southgate to stay away from coaching for now?

However, Southgate had made it clear at the time that he was committed to the England job and would not leave for club football. Now, a fresh report has emerged suggesting that he would likely reject an offer from Manchester United for the manager’s role. Southgate is currently keeping himself busy with public appearances and hosting a BBC show.

“Gareth Southgate would reject an approach from Manchester United if Ruben Amorim is sacked. It’s understood that Southgate is NOT in any rush to return to football. However, he is keeping his options open - both within the game and outside,” according to The Mirror.

United, meanwhile, have had a tough start to the season under Amorim. The Portuguese coach has managed just two wins in seven games across all competitions this season and suffered a humiliating EFL Cup defeat to fourth tier side Grimsby Town. Despite this, the board reportedly wants Amorim to continue in the role.

Amorim has some important games coming up. Manchester United will play Sunderland at home first, and then they will travel to face rivals Liverpool after the international break. If the team doesn’t get good results, Amorim will face even more pressure.
