Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has found himself at the center of growing scrutiny after being dropped for the club’s match against Newcastle United on Sunday. Head coach Ruben Amorim revealed the reason behind his decision to sideline the Cameroonian player as his side suffered yet another defeat.
Onana, who has faced increasing criticism for his poor performances since joining from Inter Milan for $61 million last summer, was not even included on the bench at St James’ Park. Instead, Altay Bayindir was handed a rare start. But the decision backfired as Bayindir too made costly mistakes in the game and they lost 4-1.
Amorim on why he dropped Onana
Amorim has clarified that his decision to drop Onana was driven by a need to let the player “disconnect” following a difficult outing against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League last week. Speaking to Sky Sports before the game, Amorim stood by his call to rest Onana, explaining the importance of managing a player’s mental state.
“Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit. Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [against Lyon]… You don’t need to like [it], but you understand because I explain every situation. The mental aspect is really, really important.”
Despite Amorim insisting the move was temporary, reports suggest Manchester United are already preparing for life beyond Onana. According to sources close to the club, the Red Devils are eyeing Zion Suzuki, a 22-year-old Japan international currently playing for Parma.
Onana’s struggles have been well-documented. Since the beginning of last season, he has committed eight errors directly leading to goals, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper in that period. The latest came during United’s 2-2 draw with Lyon, where his mishandling contributed to both goals.
Manchester United are scheduled to lock horns against Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-finals on 18 April.
